The steel is 1/16. Usually we would cut 4x4" box aluminum into c-channel, however, with the price of aluminum soaring, we couldn't find any. After comparing a custom built frame using the kitbot aluminum and the steal, this was only 4 pounds heavier.
also, we do not know anyone who can weld aluminum, so that also influenced the decision. Oh, btw, the frame is upside-down for all those who haven't figured that out already =).
