Re: pic: Team 319 - Big Bad Bob's Arm

Looks great!

Full rack capabilities and being able to lift up two robots at once is always nice

One question/caution I have for you is (I am assuming that you plan on lowering all 4 pneumatics at once to lift both yourself and the two robots you are carrying off the ground) how are you going to make sure that all four pistons extend at the same rate and same time? In 2004 we had 3 pnuematics lift our robot about a foot off the ground, then we had a hook that latched onto the bar and we simply retracted our pneumatic feet to score. The problem was we could never quite get the robot to raise up evenly, even after endlessly fidling with the variable pressure valves on each pneumatic to try and balance them. I am worried that if you dont get it just right the robot will go up crooked and perhaps drop one of the robots over the side or even bend a pnuematic shaft.

I like the idea though and its great you got it finished so soon so you have plenty of time to test

Re: pic: Team 319 - Big Bad Bob's Arm

Looks like a solid design. You are going to need rubber or plastic or something at the end of those pistons to avoid breaking the "no metal on carpet" rule.

Thumbs down Re: pic: Team 319 - Big Bad Bob's Arm

How long is the actual arm, not the tower. And in what position will it start the game. Im just curious how you will be picking up ringers off the floor (or will you?) and still be able to stay within 72 x 72 during the game.

Thats one nice looking arm. How easy is it to pick up off the ground??? How easy is it to remove the spoiler??

Both are easy. The arm is on a turret, so we can pick up a tube and score without moving the robot.

Unless I am mistaken, (and if I am please inform me) The robot can be placed diagonally in the 72x72 box, giving us ample room.

That arm just looks plain sick, that's all there is to it. Actually, it's a bit intimidating...RUN!!!!

yes but assuming that robot is approximately 38 X 28 the front (or back, which ever end is where the gripper is at the start of the game) of the robot would be about 10 inches from the corner of the 72 X 72 inch box. now add about 34 inches for the distance from the front to the arm. now your down to only about 57 inches for the actual arm. im sure you have done the math it just looks like it will be close and i wasnt sure if you had thought about that rule.

Interesting use of pneumatic cylinders. Thats going to be around 350 lbs of lifting.

Have you guys tested the lift capacity yet?

We tested the lift capacity, and we have about 700+ pounds of force. Check out the other picture of our lift system.

That, for lack of a better word, is a beast. I'd love to see that arm in action.

I thought that you couldn't 'lift' the other robots at all, be them allies or enemies. Is this rule exempt for the last phase?

All rules of that nature are exempt when in the home zone. I don't think it necessarily has to be the last phase.
