I remember seeing that hair do. It is what inspired me to become an MC one day.

wow! that is an amazing haircut! cool!
after seeing this I will definitely go with spray! (because it would be easier to create a template and spray on that.

so I have a new algorithm now:
  1. let hair grow
  2. cut it so it's pretty short
  3. create templates
  4. base coat white
  5. do the shapes with spray (this will be hard because the shapes are interlocked and not filled in)
  6. shave off the hair where there is no spray.
  7. Go to regional!

Steve, i'm guessing I should go with name brands on this one (I would imagine cheapo spray wouldnt get the vivid color you got...) right?

also, in the second picture, what's the name of the guy on the right? is that Blair? (he MCs here at Israel every year! he's an awesome MC!)

Sorry. The only pics I have are from those who forward them to me. There were lots taken in Detroit so someone must have one.

I was using a product by Fudge but I believe that they have stopped making it as I can't find anywhere (even on the web). I have started using a product by Jerome Russell. They have a product called Team Colors which are basic red, blue, green, yellow etc. I have just started using them but they seem pretty good.

Note: once you start colouring your hair it becomes a trade mark for you and eventually no one will know you if your hair is not colored. It is an expensive trend to keep up.

Yes that is Blair. Not only is he a great MC is is the best announcer in FIRST. He taught me all I know and my bad traits do not come from him, I learned them myself.

What type of spray/glue/gel do you use to keep it's shape, and does it last all day, or dry out and lose it's shape near the end of the day?

I start with a product called Spiker Glue (I believe that it is an Ice product). I then do a base white coat, colour on top and then use a spray adhesive (again I believe it is by Ice). I dry between all applications to keep hair in place and stop colour run. If you do not dry then the spray colours will thin the spiker glue and it will not hold firm. When I am done I spray the glitter that I use.

The longer it goes, the firmer it gets. I have gone to bed and when I awake, the same shape. Kids love to touch and pull and my hair goes nowhere. At the end of the day, less than 2 minutes in a hot shower and I am back to normal (no comments please).

Awesome. Thanks for the tips. A lot of the things you stated were probably common sense, but often overlooked in dealing with time constraints in the morning while doing this process. (ie: letting every coat dry first, etc..)

I'm going to predict right now that in 2008 we're going to see a lot of Steve W style hairdo clones. lol

Re: Crazy Hair

Hair driers speed up the process. Just for those who like to get up early, it takes me anywhere from 45-75 minutes to do my hair depending on style and complexity.

I would say that was a long time to spend on your hair (in the morning specifically) but I guess it's all relative.

I spend about 3 hours doing the bleach job on my hair, and then about 10 minutes (if that) putting in the spray on color on a now white/light yellow base.

I guess it shows when you see the detail in your hair style, as opposed to a one color spray job, but I guess they both get the same result when walking around an event. Everyone looks at you like you're a little strange for doing it. lol But meh, no one has the right to judge you for having spirit or dedication. Unless it's the fact that you DO have those, and you're about to win a Team Spirit award.

Re: Crazy Hair

I was at my hairdresser's on Saturday and next to me was a guy who was getting the little triangle piece under his lower lip dyed a strawberry color. He was clean shaven except for that area. (Does it have a name, like a half goatee or something?) His hair was blond.

That little show of color rocked.

We should retitle the thread as "Wacky Hair Tips for Truly Spirited FIRSTers" then.

I think this should be a section of the manual next year, or at least in the MC & Announcer's handbook.

Where is Kathie? I think NEMO should write something about this as well.

And maybe someone should present this at a Seminar during the Championship Event that we keep getting e-mails about.

Steve... You're not going to be busy on the field during The Championship Event are you?
I think you could host that seminar very easily.

In the meantime I'm going to be waiting for the E-Mail blast and/or Team Update from FIRST that has these tips we've mentioned in it.

Re: Crazy Hair

I couldn't edit my older post where I was talking about the spray stuff I use, so here it is here:

And here it is in action. This pic was actually from later in the year (Halloween night to be exact) when my hair was a lot darker, so it didn't have the white hair as a base coat.
You can see how bright the spray really is for it to show up this bright of an Orange with dark hair:
