Thanks for all the suggestions:

-Pocketing the gearboxes was because we wanted to try out the CNC and with Cosmos it tells us that the plates are plenty strong enough. They are 7068 plates at 1/4 inch. So the plates are just for fun.

-The mentors were going over the specs and said that the 3 inch cims would be better for a 2 stage reduction.

7068? You're just playing with fun materials, rather than trying to economize, right?

And as for the big CIMs, all things being equal, it's probably sensible to get rid of those somehow.

I suppose you really want to make a gearbox... because a tough box with spacers weighs only 1.77 lbs...


How big is the mammoth? Will you be mechanizing the head? If you do, post some pics, since that sounds really cool!

... and if you swap out the steel 50 tooth cluster gear for the aluminum 50 tooth cluster gear, you can save another 0.31 lbs.

The 7068 is coming as a donation from one of our near by metalshops and i'll try to get rid of the big cims.

Yeah, we kinda wanna CNC some stuff and i'll put pics up tomorrow. The mammoth is huge and the head will be moving.

Man time does fly, I'll put up some pics of the actual mammoth on tuesday or monday depending on when i can get them.
