WPILib is adapting GradleRIO - Jaci has become too powerful and we must stop her

Photo courtesy of Preston Briggs on the FRC subreddit.

This is pretty great news for the FRC community. A huge congrats to my homegirl Jaci for her hard work, and even though the devs are all volunteers, hopefully the big bucks make it to you soon.

Re: WPILib is adapting GradleRIO - Jaci has become too powerful and we must stop her

Looks like the secret is out, and it's full steam- er- power ahead (?) for the 2019 season. GradleRIO will become the default build system, and Visual Studio Code will become the default IDE for both languages (C++ and Java). Hopefully, this will make software development easier (and more powerful!) than ever before, for the benefit of all teams.

There's a lot of neat stuff coming for 2019, I hope you're all as excited as I am!

Re: WPILib is adapting GradleRIO - Jaci has become too powerful and we must stop her

Any way to sign up as beta testers?

Our team has been known to knock up the default build system in a few different ways in the past, and we'd be happy help run this through its paces in the summer/fall!

There's the official beta testing season around the end of September as is with every year for the full system. For GradleRIO specifically, you should be able to test yourself by mirroring from GitHub. There'll be more details on this at a later date while we work on the core infrastructure changes. RoboRIO testing, of course, may require the new RoboRIO image, which is only available during the official beta period.

Congrats Jaci - GradleRIO was a rockstar this year!

Now the whole Visual Studio Code thing... well... I'll leave that for another thread.

I can't wait to test the official beta! I've been messing around with VS code and GradleRIO a bit and it's awesome.

Thanks Jaci!

Re: WPILib is adapting GradleRIO - Jaci has become too powerful and we must stop her

Thanks for the great response. This has been something we have been working on and building up to for the past few months. We're hoping it ends up much better then the eclipse setup was.

For using Gradle as the build system, the choice was easy. Jaci's work on GradleRIO has been amazing, and it has make the build system side of deciding to do the switch almost trivial.

I'm sure we are going to get some questions on why we chose Visual Studio Code. For an IDE, we have 3 requirements.
  • Free
  • Cross Platform
  • Support both C++ and Java

The first 2 are fairly obvious, and the 3rd one comes from our experience supporting Netbeans and Windriver in the cRIO era. Supporting 2 separate IDE's is very difficult on our developers.

When you actually attempt to look for an IDE that meets all 3 requirements, you basically get eclipse and VS Code (And no, emacs and/or vim don't count ). We've already seen how eclipse works out, and the VS Code setup has actually been really nice to work with during testing.

One if the major things pushed for during development was a heavy separation of IDE and build system. VS Code knows how to talk to gradle, but gradle knows basically nothing about VS Code. Because of this, gradle works perfectly fine from the command line, and building/deploying from the command line will be officially supported by the WPILib Team and CSA's.

What that last part comes to is you are welcome to use any editor you want. If you want another editor, you might have to do your own setup to get Intellisense working, but since command line deploy is officially supported, if you can figure out the IDE setup you are welcome to do so. We can always revert back to building and deploying from the command line if an IDE problem comes up.

This is awesome news - we used VS and gradlerio all year and we've had only excellent experiences with it.
