Steel and aluminum tariffs in the USA

https://www.cnbc.com/2018/05/31/trum...nd-the-eu.html

With today's announcement of steel and aluminum tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and the EU, I wonder how the increases in metal prices and availabilities over the next year or so will affect FRC teams. I'm not the most well-versed on the subject, but I think it's worthy of open conversation here.

I was wondering this morning if we should stock up now for the next couple of years...

Indeed. Is there someone who has more insight into how this might affect prices on commonly used stock and parts for FRC teams?

Re: Steel and aluminum tariffs in the USA

We spend a few hundred dollars on metal every year, but it's not a very large portion of our overall budget. I don't think the incoming price increase in metal stock will affect us too much. The thing that kills our robot budget is when we decide we need 16 speed controllers. And the practice robot.

If you are on a team that's tight on a budget though, now is a great time to start learning about plywood construction methods! Cheaper, renewable, and easy to machine.

If aluminium goes way up dean's gonna need to switch to something else if he wants to stay in his budget for speeches.

Re: Steel and aluminum tariffs in the USA

I know our local metal supplier was raising prices during build season last year b/c their costs were going up due to the trade war talks from Trump. I can only imagine this won't help.

while you did that a team used rubber sheets as their intake, another only 2 CIMs for their drivetrain, and last year a team used VEX EDR and a tupperware container. Anything is possible.

I'm expecting the price of raw materials to go down a bit... but it's not really something that I'm celebrating.
