Team Update #2

Most notable thing to me: the bumper zone has been widened to 7.5" above the floor.

Better yet 360 images (warning will send straight to download) have been released.

With the Solidworks CAD "offically" being released now, if anyone can convert the textured field it to a .obj for me youd be amazing...

How terrible for teams that have bought supplies / built the structures just to find out they're wrong.

Bumper zone 1/2" higher!

I wonder why this change is needed?

I believe in intuition and inspiration. Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited, whereas imagination embraces the entire world, stimulating progress, giving birth to evolution. It is, strictly speaking, a real factor in scientific research.

They said it was to give some leeway for bumpers made using the Drive Base Kit, because it turns out that (most) teenagers suck at making inch-perfect bumpers.

We noticed a few significant issues when building our field. Very much a shame that these modifications were made so late.

Edit: I think FIRST needs to hire a carpenter, or maybe outsource one for a few months to develop the team drawings. There were a bunch of really strange features that didn't make a lot of sense, and the assemblies were absolutely asinine. A cut layout would be really great so low-resource teams could get the most bang for their buck too, but baby steps.

Agreed. Our mentors and members spent a few days comparing Team vs. Competition Version to make sure we didn't waste money on supplies and got the cut list exactly right when noticed the disparity and asked on Q & A.

Glad we caught it since the parts are for our event, and we would have wasted time, energy, and money.

Re: Team Update 2

Warning to 55" tall, championship bound teams:

2018 crate rules dictate that teams build a maximum of 60" tall crate, including a 4" tall forklift base. Add in 1/2" thick wooden floor and ceiling and you're sitting at exactly 55" left for robot.

Hmm...

Maybe design the chassis so it is easy to remove the wheels? That would shorten it by (at least) an inch.

Or maybe just make sure the actual height of the robot is at least 0.5" less than this year's maximum dimensions...or any year's maximum to be safe?
