Question What Exactly to Get FIRST Choice?

I know there was a thread for this recently, so I apologize for making another, but I need specific answers. This is my team's second year, and we have no idea what parts might come in handy. Can someone tell me the most useful items that we should order from this website?

Re: What Exactly to Get FIRST Choice?

Assuming you're 2nd year and aren't doing anything too flashy, but you still want to get some useful stuff:

Recommended:
10awg Wago lever nuts (Box of 50) - useful and a good deal
Talon SR motor controllers - Rusty but trusty

Stuff you might not need but it'll suck if you do later:
PDP
VRM

Do you use pneumatics? Then get that stuff too.

Truthfully, this round is a little sad IMO

Re: What Exactly to Get FIRST Choice?

If I were you (and I have been all too recently) I'd focus on the pneumatic equipment. It's something rookie teams often overlook because it seems difficult, but is in fact pretty easy to deal with and can do things nothing else can. Get a PCM, solinoids, regulator, pressure switch, pressure relief valve, tank, parker fitting kit, pressure gauge (or two), and tubing. The only thing you'll need to buy after that is a compressor, a manual relief valve, and some actuators plus maybe a few other fittings (which you can get at a hardware store.) It's kind of an instant entry-level pneumatics system.

That's pretty much what I had to do because my team somehow managed to lose everything but the compressor before I became a mentor.

For OP, this is sort of how I approach FIRST Choice every year:
  1. Do we need the thing?
  2. If we don't need the thing, how screwed will we be if we suddenly do?
  3. If we're not sure we need the thing, how costly or hard to come by is it?
  4. How many of the things are available? (This is good to keep in mind when prioritizing your list)
  5. Is the thing a good deal on a credit to dollars basis?
  6. Can you get a cheap, but good 'nuff knockoff from other sources?

This is why I recommend CTRE stuff, followed by pneumatic parts when in doubt. We ran into a known issue with a v1.0 PDP and had a student rip the weidmuller connectors out of a VRM. It's nice to be prepared for these kind of issues.

Allen's list is spot on.

And if we already have a pneumatic system? Buy another anyway, as replacements?

Basically it's a lottery for all teams to get "free" parts. You pick what you want and it runs through a random order of everyone's first choice, second choice, and so on. Every team has a given number of points to spend (550 this time around)

A nice part of the "Virtual KoP".

The physical KOP is for stuff where vendors/manufacturers donate enough thousands of units to put one or more in every kit. There are also vouchers from vendors who agree to give x$ worth of stuff to each team. Then, there's FIRST Choice, which is for smaller donations of parts/tools/stuff. Each part is assigned a cost in "credits", and each team is assigned a number of credits to spend. There are two priority list rounds (which work something like signing up for events), one at the beginning and another after kickoff, and some first-come-first-served periods between and after. At kickoff, additional items are added (e.g. game pieces, but other stuff as well), and teams get additional credits.

Re: What Exactly to Get FIRST Choice?

Get your priority lists done now if you haven't!

And keep at it, the website seems to be having a lot of trouble at the moment. Luckily I'm only trying to make a small change, but hopefully this error page will stop constantly blocking me

Thank you for posting this here. Be aware the best option is to email firstchoice@andymark.com for any site issues right away. We believe this is fixed now, it was due to the SQL server having too many connections at once and it needed to be restarted to fix this issue currently. It will be monitored to be sure this doesn't happen again.
