Re: Old Robots?

We usually canibalize them for random parts and such. Mainly the electrical board. We didn't do that to our last year robot because of it's performance but it's still retired because it's broken from the hard fall we took in the last match of our most recent competition.

Re: Old Robots?

the robots that preform well last much longer than the ones that don't. our 2005 robot is functioning just as well as the day it started competing last year. its actually in my living room right now because we demo'd it at an FLL competition this weekend. robots that haven't preformed as well get disassembled IN sort of a gradient the worse t5hey are the more pieces they are in. until you get to the ones that dint preform at all they are completely in tact kinda of taking up space. out 2002 robot is in one piece in out shop kind of on display. our 2003 robot the one that's 10.5' wide was striped down ans is now a shelf that holds our trophy's in the shop. the 2004 robot is striped of a drive chain a controller and any wires. but is still essentially in one piece.

Re: Old Robots?

2001 - needs to be wired, no idea what happened to the wiring
2002 - fully functional
2003 - needs some minor wiring, used as our primary display bot
2004 - ugh, we couldnt get half the stuff on this bot to work at the competition, it needs alot
2005 - 704 didnt participate in FIRST
2006 - In Fedex's hands - somewhere.

We have all of the bots on display in our lab, sometimes we display one of them in the library.

Re: Old Robots?

We took our 2003 robot and equiped it with a t-shirt cannon, which we use at school events and took with us to the 2005 ramp riot off season event. Our '04 and '05 bots are dismantled, I believe.

Re: Old Robots?

Our 2005 bot is currently in the rebuild state. The electronics on it were like a rats nest and we desided to fix it. We are also talking about modifing it to work for this years game. We were thinking of leting rookies from our team and other drive it at any off season competitions we go to. All the robots prior to 2003 have been dismantled, exept i belive one of them is in a museum somewhere, at least thats what our one mentor said, not sure on what year it is though.

Re: Old Robots?

1999 (309) - I have never seen this robot. Nor have I ever seen pictures of it.
2000 (309) - Do we still have the base? I know we have the basket sitting in the corner of Ken-Tronics.
2001 (648) - 95% intact. Almost completely functional.
2002 " - WAS completely intact before this year. Now there is no basket.
2003 " - It's completely intact. There's not much use for an obsolete drive system as far as our team is concerned.
2004 " - ~75% intact. Arm is not working. Used mostly as test driving.
2005 " - 100% intact. Perfect and best performing robot.
2006 " - ?? Will most likely stay intact. Not sure if it's arrived yet from Michigan.

All of these robots 2001-2005 and up are on a shelf above our work station. Hopefully we can get some of them into the local children's museum.

Re: Old Robots?

The Robonauts now have a "plan" for old 'bots. We keep two robots fully functional; Chainzilla (2005) & Magnum (2006) will be dancing until the 2007 robot comes online, then Chainzilla will be retired most probably to help new teams. For example, Immobilus (2003) and Telescorpio (2004) both went to Louisiana and Mississippi for rookie Katrina Teams. Telescorpio was our first crab-drive thus had substantial sentimental value but reports are that Telescorpio loves her new home ... PRICELESS. I hope someday that FIRST enacts a rule that allows rookie teams the use of manufactured parts from a donated robot; maybe the rule should include a weight limit ... how about 40 lbs.

Although only time will tell, we may have to hold onto Magnum for several years because, like most of the other shooters around the country, it is a real crowd pleaser. Since Magnum is already gymnasium compatible with its no-scrub crab drive, we don't believe it will be to difficult to make it a half-court-shooting robot. With a few programming mods, we eventually hope to just have to place the green light directly below the goal on a 3 foot stand and start shooting 3 pointers. CHALLENGE: A dozen Krispy Kreamers to the first team to make a three-pointer during a break at an NBA game.

Have a nice Easter,
Lucien

Re: Old Robots?

Our old robots are used for drivers practice and 'fix-it' practice.
We warm up our skills by fixing old ones and if we need another robot to practice driving with - say defense or the practice bot is in repair - we use the old ones.
Pat summed up our old robots pretty good here
However for the community we have CASEY

We do almost the exact same thing, except instead of a museum we have them all hanging by cables above the practice field.

Re: Old Robots?

Chuck and TechnoKats are on the same path with this. But we usually have the last one or two reserved for practice and in-season demos. We even have the first Chuck, even though he's a mere skeleton of his original self--he's from back in the days when you had to send your control system back.

Re: Old Robots?

2001-OCCAM...dead...
2002-OCCAM II only a frame and some electronics
2003-OCCAM III fully functional
2004-OCCAM IV fully functional, minus a few components
2005-OCCAM V one victor needs to be fixed and the telescoping arm is dead
2006-OCCAM VI a war hero, pickup device broke when we crated it after VCU

we like to show-off at middle schools with 2003, mostly. it was our best ever and being for the most part a box on wheels it is easy shipping

Re: Old Robots?

All of the old MOEs are slowly stripped of parts - the first original MOE from 2000 has nothing left except the frame. We don't have enough storage space to keep many of them around.

One exception - the 2001 MOE - "Lil MOE" - is kept running for demonstrations for two reasons. One, it is the 2001 National Champion! Two, it is small and compact and easy to take around to various locations. It also has an arm (orginally designed to lift the ramp from that year's game) that we put a glove on and use to wave to little kids. They love it.

Re: Old Robots?

We use our old robots for rookie training, public demonstrations, driver practice and to help mentor new teams.

This past fall we helped Team 1712, Dawgma by retro-fitting our 2003 Gallileo Champion robot to pick up Tetras. This allowed the team to compete at Ramp Riot and gain valuable experience.

It was also a great experience for our team to get some build time and help others.

Keep those old robots if you can spare the room!!!

Re: Old Robots?

2002 - completely functional; a mentor tuned it up last year and it's currently at a local science center
2003 - mostly disassembled; it still mostly looks at the robot that made it to the competition but all of the electronics are gone and possibly a couple wheels
2004 - completely functional; at the school
2005 - completely functional with an improved autonomous mode, but at the moment a couple PWM cables have been borrowed for our 2006 robot. It's at the school.
2006 - on its way to Atlanta
