Agreed! Dozer should have a use in this year's game.

Like what? In History class (I'm Canadian), we learned that while Pierre Trudeau was signing the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, the pen he was using broke. He swore in front of the Queen.

Re: 2018 Game Speculation

If you watch the Power Up teaser very carefully, it is a reference to TRON. In the movie TRON Legacy When Flynn's son goes into the abandoned arcade he walks up to the TRON game that is covered in plastic. He takes the plastic off and puts a quarter in the game. Just like in the teaser. Flynn's son finds the secret room goes in and WALKS DOWN STAIRS. He finds the master computer where he is then digitized and put in the game. Just like the teaser. In the movie TRON the power discs are frisbees. Which, in FRC, could be used to play a pong like game where you have to shoot frisbees into a high slot that moves back and forth. But there is a variety of games that could be played in TRON. The arcade in the movie even has similar gaming sound effects playing.

The images on the side of the arcade are just a progression (or evolution) of the different FRC games played throughout its history.

I believe the whole teaser is actually a reference to TRON. Check the link below and watch for yourself.

Oh, I got that right away.

I don't really think that we'll have that close a repeat especially after only five years for frisbees and one for a disk shape (gears). That said, we have seen coin shapes in the teaser graphics, so it bears consideration. If we need to launch discs, at least it should be a bit safer this year with most teams using compliant wheels rather than pneumatic tires at several thousand RPM.

Re: 2018 Game Speculation

Something I just thought of: What about a game similar to Balloon Fight? Or, as mentioned earlier, Mario Kart, which features power ups. IIRC Mario Kart 64 had a steamboat in the background on one of the tracks.

Re: 2018 Game Speculation

I'm speculating that the actual game will be similar to Logomotion (2011) since it has been 6 years since we have used tubes. The tubes will probably be golden FRC coins which will be inserted onto green pipes suspended at the center of the field just like the older FRC games where defense had a very large role in the game meta. I also speculate that the Donkey Kong stairs are hinting towards the end game which could likely be a stair stepping end game or even a Donkey Kong ramp climb.

I'm betting on 971 for this type of game set up but 254 might steal the day again. I would also forecast another season of Torqueonauts.

Re: 2018 Game Speculation

Here's an interesting idea: What if the robot literally has to "power up" something? As in, the robot must electrically interface with something on the field in order to score points. I don't know how safe or feasible it would be, but it could be an interesting challenge to have some form of connector on the field as a parallel to robots in the real world that need to connect to base stations in order to sync data or charge.

Re: 2018 Game Speculation

I copied and edited this from another thread and I think it reveals a lot of what this year will be like.

"Here is an analysis based on each game: (L=lifting, GB1=Game with ball 1,U= unusual object game, GB2=Game with ball 2)

2017: FIRST Steamworks U
-Arguably emphasis on placing gears (Unusual object) on airship
-Launch tiny balls (Arguably also unique) into boilers
-Climb

2016: FIRST Stronghold GB1
- Shooting balls into towers
- Defenses are the other game objective/objects, as well as scaling.

2015: Recycle Rush L
- Lifting totes into stacks
- Don't want to say anything else about this game

2014: Aerial Assist GB2
- Goals on opposite sides of field
- Shooting trackballs into those goals.
- Not many other game objects and objectives (truss isn't huge as you didn't really need to make a new mechanism for it)

2013: Ultimate Ascent U
-Score frisbees (unusual object) into goals.
-Could say the pyramids were also somewhat unusual.

2012: Rebound Rumble GB1
-One may argue it is a GB2, as it has goals on opposite sides and is a pretty traditional type of game.
-Not really as another game objects in bridges.
-Larger emphasis on bridges than hanging in 2010.

2011: Logomotion L
-Teams organized pool tubes into the FIRST logo on a rack.
-Teams designed lift mechanism which would place the tubes onto said rack.

2010: Breakaway GB2
-More traditional (pretty much robot soccer) with goals on opposite sides.
-Shooting/punching balls into goals
-Hanging was included, but not a huge emphasis.

2009: Lunacy U
-Moon rocks and cells are unusual game pieces
-Could say that the crater (the field) was also an unusual object.

2008: FIRST Overdrive GB1
-Teams circled through the field
-Not traditional shooting game
-Trackballs scored over overpass (extra game objective).

2007: Rack 'n Roll L
-Pool tubes scored onto rack.
-Lifting mechanism for scoring tubes onto multiple heights on rack.

2006: Aim High GB2
-Goals on opposite sides of field.
-No extra game objects besides goal and ramp in front of it.
-Emphasis on shooting in goals (and defense).

2005: Triple Play U
-Unique game piece in tetras (place on goals)

2004: FIRST Frenzy: Raising the Bar GB 1
-Mobile goals and hanging bar (extra game objects)
-less shooting more placing
-Goals are not on opposite sides of field (less traditional)

2003: Stack Attack L
-Start of the cycle
-Teams stack and attack stacks of totes.
-Teams used lifting mechanisms to stack"

Because of all of this, I think this year which should be GB 2, will have a coin that you launch into coin slots on opposite sides of the field with maybe a ramp or stairs that you have to climb to do so. I think they will have a small ramp and not stairs simply because stairs could easily damage robots but some argue they will use stairs. I also think that you will get something special when you "power up" by placing some coins, maybe 10 coins but that is mostly just a guess. Also it will likely have emphasis on defense and blocking coin launches and no extra game pieces except maybe a "power up" but I think "power ups" will not be a physical object but rather maybe extra points or something not physical

based on the theme it would be "Power Up", as in collecting a object that would enhance function.
