JCPenney's still offering full ride?

Hey All,

Starting a new team in Arkansas. Formerly in team 3734 in Lake Forest, IL. When 3734 started back in 2012, JCPenney's gave us a full ride for our first year. Any idea of that still exists? Can anyone else confirm they are still doing this for first year teams? I'll be calling tomorrow, but figured I'd see if there was a canned request form somewhere.

Thanks!

Re: JCPenney's still offering full ride?

I don't believe so. The jcpenney grant has seemingly been dead a while, and when I was doing sustainability research I discovered something peculiar. Among every team that ever competed and no longer does so, jcpenney was the second most common sponsor (244 teams.)

Not only did the jcpenney grant stop happening, but it killed teams in the process.

Your best bet is probably the NASA Rookie Grant.

Welcome to Arkansas. Our team has been doing FRC for a while and we have just started an FTC team this year. We have been mentoring FTC for the last 2 years and wanted something outside the school system so everyone could join. I recommend you come to the Stemposium on the 18th. My team will have a booth there and I think you will find what you are looking for. https://www.eventbrite.com/e/stempos...?aff=ehomecard

Re: JCPenney's still offering full ride?

As a general suggestion - if you are starting an FRC team, create a business plan that includes a 3, 5, and 7 year sustainability plan. This should include contingencies and "rainy day" funds which will kick in and account for registration fees for if/when your primary sponsor from your rookie season does not give you a new grant for your 2nd and 3rd years.

Plan ahead, don't share the fate of those JCP teams.

Additionally, does your team have affiliation with a 501c3 currently? Do you have an FRC team already mentoring you?

If not, I highly recommend reaching out to team 16 or 323.

There is a lot that goes into starting a new team, please reach out for guidance.

Re: JCPenney's still offering full ride?

Reach out to your Regional Director. I sent you a PM. If you are where I think, we have an event there on August 18 where you can meet several other teams in your area.
