Where is Michigan without Rick Snyder?

So Michigan is in an enviable position with massive state funding and government support for FIRST Robotics. Every state should want to be like Michigan. It's my understanding (and please correct me where I'm wrong) that a lot of this support comes from Governor Rick Snyder.

My question is, where is Michigan without Rick Snyder? Was there enough Government support at the lower levels to spur on such impressive growth? How did the initial advocacy process go, and would it have been as successful without Rick Snyder? I know very little about how the Michigan powerhouse came to be, and I would love to learn about how to make the same thing happen in other regions.

I say all this as the Minnesota Advocacy Conference is in full swing, and many teams are working hard to promote FIRST in Minnesota.

I feel as though this question is particularly relevant with Rick Snyder's term limit approaching, and with that in mind, where does FIM stand when Rick Snyder leaves? I could be way overestimating the importance of the Governor in these matters which is why I'm asking the questions.

Re: Where is Michigan without Rick Snyder?

What's good for the goose is good for the gander. There are reasons beyond a deep personal connection for the next governor to keep funding FiM. Here in KS we don't have state funding but we did do advocacy at the State Capitol last year because of a personal connection to Governor Brownback. With his departure, we figured that the opportunity may be lost but we got word back from Governor Colyer's office this week that they would be glad to have us back in the Capitol rotunda again this year. So I think FiM will be alright.

Re: Where is Michigan without Rick Snyder?

As a team in Michigan, I am interested in the same thing. I guess time will tell how Michigan does without Rick Synder to pull the reins. The real truth will show up in about two to three years I would expect. It will greatly depend on the next governor and if they choose to support these project like Rick Synder did.

we will know by 2020 I would guess.

Gov. Snyder is a true nerd, who helped MI FIRST teams. I am not sure if we will ever have another govnir like him, who will support STEM programs. I just hope we don't get some illiterate governor who will start cutting funds to education programs.

Re: Where is Michigan without Rick Snyder?

It's fairly uncertain. Even though Snyder is leaving, it's not for sure whether the funding will stay or not. Knowing most politicians it will be an easy budget cut, but I still hold some hope.

Even if the state support does leave, the impact Snyder as had on FIM will never leave, since so many of the teams he supported are now self sufficient. Not to mention the extremely supportive environment that has been created in Michigan for FIRST teams. What may happen, however, is Michigan's huge growth rate could slow dramatically.

Either way, while Snyder leaving doesn't necessarily mean we will lose our funding, it is almost certain that his replacement won't be such an advocate and outspoken supporter of FIRST, and that is a shame by itself.

Teams are at the Capitol today. Check out #STEMatMNCapitol

Wish my team could be there, but we have competing outreach events that are keeping us from participating.

Re: Where is Michigan without Rick Snyder?

There was a thread earlier this month regarding this. Take a second to read it (https://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/s...d.php?t=162114).

It is important for teams to realize that ultimately, it is their responsibility to make their representatives such big proponents of FIRST. Reach out to your representatives. Invite them to your build space. Invite them to competitions. Invite them to your outreach events. Write letters. Offer to give presentations. Get involved.

There aren't any downsides to trying, but there are a lot of downsides to doing nothing.

Re: Where is Michigan without Rick Snyder?

2010-7 events (120 teams if I remember correctly)
2012-10 events (just under 200 teams) 67% growth over 2 years
2014-15 events (between 280 and 300 teams) 45% growth over 2 years
2016- 21 events (roughly 420 teams) 45% growth over 2 years
2018- 26 events (roughly 500 teams) 19% growth

I believe the grants started in the 2013/2014 school year, or 2014 competition year. n a percentage basis though, a lot of the growth was the first few years.
The slow down of recent years is likely due to nearing saturation as the total team count is around 500.

To put that in context, MHSAA (Michigan High School Athletic Association) has 750 member high schools.... Let me state that one more time MHSAA, which has been around for a long time, and has many, many, many sports has only about 50% higher membership than FRC.

I think the program gets enough facetime in a positive light for representatives and hits enough areas that it will likely continue, but it likely would not have started with the concentrated effort and a governor with heavy interest in STEM.

The next couple of years, we will see the first couple rounds of those grant graduates finishing up college. It would be interesting to see what/if there is a measurable impact. This report and/or its source data would likely be good to reference.

Re: Where is Michigan without Rick Snyder?

Here's Michigan by team growth alone.
You can definitely see when the state grants kicked in.

-------- 2008 ----- 2009 ----- 2010 ----- 2011 ----- 2012 ----- 2013 ----- 2014 ----- 2015 ----- 2016 ----- 2017
MI ----- 118 ------ 132 ------- 140 ------ 171 ------ 190 ------ 203 ------ 277 ------ 345 ------ 412 ------ 509
% growth ------- 11.9% ------ 6.1% ---- 22.1% ---- 11.1% ---- 6.8% ---- 36.5% ---- 24.5% --- 19.4% ---- 23.5%

Re: Where is Michigan without Rick Snyder?

Below is a post of a graph I made comparing growth in NY and MI some time back (forgive the x axis labels). I would caution against reading into this too much, but you can clearly see the change in MI team growth.

Re: Where is Michigan without Rick Snyder?

I keep praising about Gov. Snyder for his support, now I woul like to extend deep appreciation and thanks to Gail Alpert and other FIM leadership for their tremendous effort in promoting FIRST, in general STEM education and educators.
