Re: NVIDIA Jetson TX1

Using a supercapacitor would be in a grey area of R31 and R32 in my book. It's probably not a "battery". But it might be a "source of electrical energy". You wouldn't have a COTS exemption.

EDIT: If you are using the supercapacitor linked in the Nvidia thread, I can't believe any inspector would let that pass.

Shockingly (Get it? Pun intended) it cleared inspection by multiple inspectors. I'm not sure what the "COTS exemption" is but the circuit works and is very safe. It is held securely inside of a larger protective case and I don't personally think it poses anymore of a hazard than someone strapping a lithium-ion battery inside of a laptop, phone, or tablet onto their robot.

More details and specifics about the circuit to come. We just got done with our event. It was a blast and we had a crazy amount of fun.

Re: NVIDIA Jetson TX1

We used the device linked and passed inspection with no issues and had 4 inspectors in our pit at one point (a whole other story). We had no issues with power on the board this weekend with the exception of our heat sink coming loose which prevented the board from powering on.

Overall it performed well, we just have some PID bugs to tune on the robot side of things.

With a TX1 or a TK1?

Wow... I'm impressed. We've had nothing but issues with everything we've tried, except the capacitor.

Re: NVIDIA Jetson TX1

I got the TX1 board running off of a second VRM using option #1 from this post on the nvidia forums. They warn about the hard shutdown being possibly an issue, but the board seems to be powering on fine for now.

Haven't tried connecting to it yet after a few startup/shutdown cycles or driving around, as we ran out of time in the lab.

Marshall, did you try Option #1 before moving to Option #2 for changing the capacitor values? We didn't have any capacitors on hand that were the right value, let alone size. Also, could you provide more info on the supercap you guys are using?

Re: NVIDIA Jetson TX1

***Attention Silicon Valley FRC and FTC Teams!***
NVIDIA will be hosting its first-ever FIRST Day at our GPU Technology Conference (GTC) on Thursday, April 7th from 10am – 2:30pm at the San Jose Convention Center. Just a few miles from the San Jose State Event Center, GTC is the largest event of the year for developers like you working on the forefront of visual computing and A.I. — you know, the kind of computing that helps robots connect, see, think and learn. April 7th is a practice day at the San Jose Event Center and we are hoping some of you can join us for this FIRST Day at GTC. Students must be accompanied by an adult, and entrance to the event is provided free of charge.

We’ve got some special events lined up for just for FIRST Participants:

A Hands-on Lab that includes Deep Learning and Getting Started on NVIDIA Jetson
This will be a practical hands-on session on deep learning and Caffe with GPU acceleration. Each station will include a Jetson for detecting and classifying objects in realtime from a live camera using neural networks.

To make sure you leave GTC with everything you need to take your robotics to the next level, each hands-on lab station will include a free Jetson TX1 to take home, compliments of NVIDIA.

Tour of the NVIDIA GTC Exposition Hall
• Come see our intelligent, autonomous machine and robot demos that includes everything from submersibles to drones that help with search and rescue to ruggedized, autonomous vehicles that use deep learning.
• Experience the VR Village where you can explore the latest advances in VR technologies and learn all about the visualization power they demand. You’ll see VR demos from 3D gaming, to product design, to cinematic experiences and beyond
• See demos on artificial intelligence, graphics virtualization, accelerated computing, product design, self-driving cars, media & entertainment and more!

There will also be a presentation on NVIDIA technology and how GPUs have changed the game in everything from gaming to movies to the new frontier in artificial intelligence.

Space is limited, so please sign up here to reserve your spot: http://goo.gl/forms/wU4MFGqcFI
Hope to see you there!
