Re: 2009 Driver Station

If I'm not mistaken, the 2009 driver station was the first year of the cRIOs, and they were controlled by those blue controllers (as opposed to laptops). Those controllers had some problems, including durability problems. If you don't have one on hand, you'll probably be hard pressed to find one.

You can find more information about the 2009 (-2014) control system here, thanks to the outstanding work of team 358.

Correct on all counts. The 2009 driver station is best used as a paperweight, as FIRST had to release several fixes mid-season to try to make them survive. If you're using a cRIO, you'd be better served using a laptop and the 2014-spec software.

Details for the components
Set up instructions (including a link to download the 2009 Control System manual)

Since that driver station was only in use for one year, and that was before FIRST switched website addresses, breaking all of the old links to documentation, it's probably going to be difficult to find really helpful tutorials. If I were in your place, I would try to load 2010-2011 firmware onto the cRIO and control it with a laptop.

Any driver station through the 2017 version will control the CRio robots. 2015-2017 have a 2014 communication setting. The 2914 and below lets you set some variables and supports some remote DS IO boards.

Updating the Crio firmware is not necessary to interface with the driver stations. Updating the firmware requires re compiling the source code which is problematic. You have to use the right WPLIB plugins and the correct version program languages which not the current versions. You have to update the source to which version of the WPLIB you are reason. Small changes, but you know how picky and literal minded programs are...

Re: 2009 Driver Station

Shameless self-promotion: if you're playing with the 2009 driver station, you may be interested in my whitepaper about its software. I agree, however, that it's definitely not the easiest path to getting a robot working.

Note: if anyone has the 2009 driver station update ("DSUD.BIN") laying around, I'd very much appreciate a copy. I've been unable to find it online.

Sure they can use a current DS version, but I'm fairly sure they will need to update the firmware on the cRIO at the least, and probably also recompile the program. The 2009 cRIO firmware interfaces with the blue control box. If they want to use that cRIO with a driver station laptop, will they not need to update the cRIO firmware to a version that communicate with a laptop instead of the blue box (i.e. 2010-2011)?
