Norgren Pressure Relief Valve - Reassemble?

In a moment of foolishness, I disassembled the Norgren pressure relief valve last year. Can this be reassemled and used safely?

Thanks,

Re: Norgren Pressure Relief Valve - Reassemble?

If you could elaborate on what exactly got "disassembled" and perhaps provide a photo or two that would help significantly.

Re: Norgren Pressure Relief Valve - Reassemble?

If you have all the parts and put it together correctly it will work as it did before. So yes you can reassemble it. Some hardliners will call it "modified". But it is really a simple device.

And it needs to be "disassembled" to a degree to adjust it as required by the rules

Re: Norgren Pressure Relief Valve - Reassemble?

On the other hand, if you don't know what you're doing, it's probably possible to reassemble it in some fashion that will impair it's functionality. Which is why the rules state that you can't modify pneumatic devices.

Re: Norgren Pressure Relief Valve - Reassemble?

When they first were used you where not allowed to adjust the relief valve. The lasted until they discovered they didn't come adjusted from the factory. Anyway if it works and doesn't leak, you put it together correctly.

Re: Norgren Pressure Relief Valve - Reassemble?

Since it was assembled once, with simple, adjustable parts, and easily dissasembled - it seems like it could be assembled again without catastrophe, as long as all the parts go where they belong...

Re: Norgren Pressure Relief Valve - Reassemble?

You took a relief valve apart without knowing what you were doing?

Do it again!

If you have a 2nd one, you can use it as a reference when putting the first one back together. The most important thing is to test (and possibly readjust) to make sure they vent at 120 psi.

I was trying to track down why we weren't getting the pressure we should have been. One of the things I did was go through with a student and redo the taping on all of the parts. When we got to the pressure relief valve, I didn't realize it came as an assembly, and thought it needed tape in the middle. Oops. *blush*

Picture of disassembled valve. Not much to it. Make sure the rubber side of the poppet faces the valve seat.

Safely - possibly, depending on you putting it together correctly
Legally - per the rules, no. Pneumatic devices must be in their "original, unaltered condition" (minus the exceptions listed in R82). "Disassembled" doesn't sound like "unaltered" to me.

Yes, I know R82 doesn't allow adjusting the pressure relief valve. R93 requires it. Don't like the contradiction in the rules? Take it up with the GKC or submit a question to Q&A. I'm not thrilled with rules ambiguities either, but I don't have Q&A access to submit a question.
