Agreed. I want a game with less HUGE obstacles on the field. Rack 'n' Roll also rubbed me the wrong way.

If anyone hasn't noticed, FIRST is doing a water game for FLL, so something might be in the works for FRC in a few years.

Could be, but again, FLL has had somewhat of an environmental theme for a while (Nature's Fury, Food Factor, Trash Trek, and Animal Allies) and a water game doesn't seem out of the ordinary. However, FRC has gone from Medieval catapults (Renaissance) to Steampunk airships (Industrial Revolution) and it doesn't seem odd for the game to be something along the lines of the future or maybe even the present. If FIRST continues with this pattern, which might not be likely, as too many games on the future may be weird, there wouldn't be a water game in the future, but it does seem slightly likely that we will have a water game.

Re: 2018 Game Speculation

After 15 years of ball-game, no-ball-game, this year they threw that rhythm off with the fuel. So I am going to double down this year and say no balls next year. Maybe its time for an inner tube comeback?

That or I can just speculate the same thing we all have for 'next season' since they introduced the waterproof kill switches:

Water game!!!!

Re: 2018 Game Speculation

With 'fuel' this year, we've definitly ended the ball/no ball pattern.

But I don't recall if anyone else has identified the drivetrain pattern:

2010--Breakaway--huge floor obstacles
2011--Logo motion--flat floor

2012--rebound rumble--floor obstacles
2013--ultimate ascent--flat floor

2014--ariel assist --flat floor
2015--recycle rush--small floor obstacles

2016-- stronghold--huge floor obstacles
2017-- steamworks --flat floor.

Yes, this isn't a consistent two year pattern but it clearly sways back and forth.

So I think 2018 will be a floor obstacle game. All you people drawing drivetrains with tiny wheels, probably need to shelve those. Big wheels, tracks, I don't know.

On the question of theme, I'll add:

More Game themes--
Zombies
Super Heros (or mutants)

And I'd put three stars on super heros. Really popular.

We have a shooting game for 2018, correct? I imagine all of these can lend themselves to that, but my personal thoughts are Western, Jungle, Space, Pirates, in that order, Jungle is so high up because I think that FIRST wants to follow their Animal based FLL theme.
I feel they're going to go Sci-Fi/Space for 2018.
They went from Med-Evil times in Stronghold to the 1900's in Steamworks,
So it will be something like:
SpaceJam, or SpaceOdyssey or SpaceCommand or something like that...

It will have a 1950's/Jetsons space motif and based around a planet colony or space-station...

Calling it...

Re: 2018 Game Speculation

I'm 100% on board with any speculation that says 2019 will be space themed with the 50th Anniversary of Apollo 11 in 2019.

Back to 2018 speculation:

Three scoring objectives have worked well for them the past couple years (except for fuel, but that's an individual game balance problem) so I think three scoring objects is here to stay for 2018.

I'm expecting anything BUT wide open stretches of carpet greater than 1/3 the length of the field.

I'm expecting them to go away from the "climbing" end-game. Expect robots needing to be in a zone or on a raised element of the field which can be driven onto.

I'm ready for a game piece we've never seen before in conjunction with a blast from the past. I would not be surprised if the completely new game piece IS NOT the "primary" game piece.

I agree, maybe space exploration? The robots try to take over regions on the field to gain points.
