CHS 2019

Inspired by the previous MAR threads I figured I'd make a thread for CHS 2019.

CHS 2019 Season

All-Time CHS Statistics

CHS 2019 events:
Week 1 CHS District Event - Haymarket, VA USA - Fri 3/1 to Sun 3/3
Week 1 CHS District Event - Glen Allen, VA USA - Fri 3/1 to Sun 3/3
Week 2 CHS District Event - Bethesda, MD USA - Fri 3/8 to Sun 3/10
Week 3 CHS District Event - Owings Mills, MD USA - Fri 3/15 to Sun 3/17
Week 3 CHS District Event - Portsmouth, VA USA - Fri 3/15 to Sun 3/17
Week 4 CHS District Event - Oxon Hill, MD USA - Fri 3/22 to Sun 3/24
Week 5 CHS District Event - Blacksburg, VA USA - Fri 3/29 to Sun 3/31
Week 7 CHS District Championship - Fairfax, VA USA - Wed 4/10 to Sat 4/13

Some quick takeaways from the spreadsheets:
  • 22 out 122 CHS teams are only registered for one event currently.
  • Four events have reached their listed capacity, the other three events have 17 play slots left open between them.
  • For the third straight year CHS is currently at a net loss for teams, this will probably lead to losing 1-2 championship slots.

Can we get some team growth instead of facebook growth one of these years?

Just a quick point out, one of the rookie teams is not listed on the all-time CHS Statistics Sheet.

Re: CHS 2019

A big part of the repeated loss of teams is DC teams have trouble staying around past a few seasons. DC lost 27% of their teams from last season this year compared to 5% for Maryland and no change for Virginia.

Fixed. They were in the 2019 schedule and the 2019 list on All-Time, I'd just forgotten to update the main page.

Re: CHS 2019

I really love this statistics sheet. I've been bouncing around blue alliance pages looking for the data presented in this, making it easily accessible. MY one question is on the advancement to CMP page, what is the question marks next to the reasoning for advancement for some of them, specifically 1598's 2017 slot?

Re: CHS 2019

A new rookie, team 7756 the Bionic Blue Devils, showed up bringing CHS up to 123 teams. They're currently only registered for VAPOR, hopefully they get a second event soon.

Question marks show up when I'm confused how a team advanced. In 2017 CHS had 23 champs slots, 3x Winner, 2x CA, 2x EI, 1x RAS for a total of 8 awards slots leaving 15 points slots. 6334 winning RAS and DCMP creates an additional point slot, 1610 declined Worlds and so (by my math) that slot ends up going to 4456. I remember 1598 saying that they were next on the list if 1610 declined, so there's an incongruity. Probably someone ranked ahead of 1598 had already received a lottery slot, but I don't know what team. So, it gets a question mark.

It's not just sustainability, but formation of new teams have been a problem. We only have 3 rookies at the moment, which is lower than both last year's and the year before's rookie number. it's hard because a lot of communities either don't have the money or the interest in doing it. take Chesterfield County for example. In the county, there is 1 School-based FRC team, 3 School-Based FTC teams(High Schools), 1 Specialty School-Based Team, and 1 Community-based FRC team. That's 6 schools in the county already with teams, but there is 11 schools(including the specialty school) in the county, so it is a lot of missed opportunity in the county. Most of these teams are not even in contact. This lack of unity and support also contributes to the fall of some teams, as there is always those off years teams have, and they will need support between each other, but when they are divided like this county, it is really hard to get out of that hole.

Re: CHS 2019

There is a reason for this: the County Leadership is neural if not hostile to FIRST teams.

Re: CHS 2019

Quick update:
  • CHS is up to 124 teams with the addition of rookie team 7770 "TBD"
  • 16 teams are still only registered for one event
  • There are still three slots open at VAPOR, six slots open at VABLA with capacity getting bumped up to 34 from 32.
  • The other five CHS events are all nominally full but should still grow a bit to get more teams their second plays.

It's looking like VABLA could be a very good third play option for CHS teams that are already registered for week 1 and week 3 events.

This brings the district to a net positive attrition for the first time in CHS history!

Re: CHS 2019

CHS 2019 Season and All-Time CHS Statistics spreadsheets are both updated.

All CHS teams have at least two plays, six teams have three district plays, and 2914 is also going all the way to Hawaii in Week 5, enjoy it guys!

Re: CHS 2019

It looks like 1137 Rocket Sauce has deregistered for their events, this brings the total CHS team count down to 128 (net +2 over 2018).

Team 190 has registered for VAPOR, they're (currently) the only out-of-district team registered for a CHS event this year.

CHS wound up with 21 champs slots for 2019, matching last year and slightly exceeding my 20 slots prediction.

CHS 2019 Season and All-Time CHS Statistics spreadsheets are both updated.
