based on the theme it would be "Power Up", as in collecting a object that would enhance function.
Well, game titles have certainly included wordplay/puns/multiple-meanings in the past. It's possible that the title refers to all of (1) Powering on electronics in some sense, (2) Collecting items to get "more powerful" in some sense, and (3) Powering oneself "upward" via ramp/stairs/etc in some sense.

However, I find it much more likely that any sort of powering on in sense (1) I just gave would be via closing a switch already on the field similar to the Steamworks climbing touchpad, not any attempt to have robots put 12V across two field components somehow.

Re: 2018 Game Speculation

Kanye West announced that he was going to release an album in 2014. It took him 2 years, but he released TLOP in early 2016.

Kanye West announced that he was going to release an album in 2016. It still has yet to come out. That album's (alleged) name? Turbo Grafx 16.

Kanye will be releasing his album as an entire themed playlist for the 2018 game.

Re: 2018 Game Speculation

It seems to me that in these teasers they never show what you will actually be doing, but the end goal in which the game will lead up to. An excellent example being Steamworks, generating steam in order to "take flight" for an airship. Seems to me that we will be generating electricity in order to "power up" something. Likely some sort of game consul or some form of machine that can help people in some way.

As stated previously in this thread FIRST hasn't used tubes in a while, so perhaps some form of "wiring" in order to send an electrical signal. I doubt it will actually be themed around a video game, but these are just my theories.

Re: 2018 Game Speculation

Have you seen the running turkey on today's FRC Blog.

Many of the 80's video games had the hero running to escape harm, get prizes or reach a goal.

Wouldn't it be fun if instead of wheels, teams had to design walking/running robots?

No, no it would not, although our electrical lead would be all over it.

In concept it would be fun but it would be really hard on the field floor. I don't think any type of carpet would survive a weekend.

Another issue with mandating walking robots is defining the term walking. I have seen arguments over the years if what you show in your third link is walking because the feet move in a circle.

Re: 2018 Game Speculation

I wouldn't expect the rules to require a walking robot, but I can see the FRC game designers putting in a challenge (perhaps End Game) that would be easier to do with some type of walking linkage versus wheels.

Should this happen, I would hope that the GDC didn't try to explicitly REQUIRE walkers, but to make the challenges of the game implicitly make them clearly superior. (DARPA challenge has done this the past few years.) Even if the game preferred legs, I would hope that there would still be a role for wheeled robots, and that doing 6-legged or 4-legged robots would be adequate for many tasks, as getting a 2-legged robot to walk on anything but very level ground or on ginormous feet is still pretty much R&D stuff, not to mention carrying out tasks or dealing with robot-to-robot interactions (ramming!) as it walks.

It would be a lot of fun, but it's unlikely to happen.

Game design has to consider the huge variation in skill level among teams. That's why, for example, you can get auto points for something pretty simple: go forward, cross a line. If the threshold is "create a robot that walks," then you've suddenly made the game too hard for a significant portion of teams.

Harder than scoring 40 kPa of fuel into the Boiler?

That's not the "threshhold" though, that's the challenge for the top-tier teams. The threshhold for 2017 is technically just being able to drive around, because zone defense is okay.

Re: 2018 Game Speculation

The last 3 years has brought a new element to the game design. Alliances have had to accomplish 2 different manipulative tasks during teleop:

2015: stack totes, and cap with a can
2016: shoot boulders and open gates/cross defenses
2017: shoot fuel and place gears

I expect that the 2018 game will continue this aspect.
