This list is based on the TBA API, so it lags about a day behind the true data.

Re: Registration 2018

For us
The decision for the third event came about pretty easy.
We are used to traveling to two events, and having the event on our campus we said let's just raise the extra 4 grand to do a third then and travel twice.
It lined up well being able to do 1 3 5.
If we couldn't get buckeye we talked about Long Island or NYC

P.S.
Canada is listed both as a single country and as the individual provinces
Did Michigan break the 500 team mark? That is insane.

Yes, I just did a scrape from TBA: 511 Michigan teams.

After 17 seasons at the top of the world, 568, Nerds of the North, is no longer the northernmost team in the world. Across the Arctic Circle (but closer to it) is team 7239, Hell Robotics of Hell, Norway.

Team 5993, the Tassie Tigers of Hobart Australia (Tasmania) are still the farthest south.

Countries:
  • 3013 USA
  • 256 Canada
  • 89 China
  • 88 Mexico
  • 70 Israel
  • 61 Turkey
  • 53 Australia
  • 9 Brazil
  • 8 Chinese Taipei (Taiwan)
  • 4 Netherlands
  • 3 United Kingdom, Dominican Republic, Chile
  • 2 Japan, India, France, Colombia
  • 1 Vietnam, Switzerland, Sweden, Singapore, Poland, Paraguay, Norway, Italy, Greece, Germany, Ethiopia, Czech Republic, Croatia

Michigan alone is now the size of the entirety of 2001 FRC.

511/20 = 26 events, assuming 40 teams per event and two events per team, with 9 third-play spots. 26 events / 6 weeks = 4.33 events per week. Looks like Michigan will need a fifth field, or a longer season, or more than 40 teams per event. The latter would mean playing more than 80 qualifying matches per event, or playing less than 2 matches per team -- and that last one would not sit well with many. I think the days will be longer at Michigan events.

Expansion is good for extending the reach of FRC's mission, but it can also burst seams.

Can't happen. FRC is too big to fail.

Clearly that's 8 teams too many.

The last I heard, MI also had about the same number (and same surplus) of FLL teams and even more FTC teams (including 147 NEW rookie teams this year). Almost 1,600 teams at the three levels.

Here is where veteran teams of last season are missing from.
And where the rookies are coming from.
Although registration isn't all done yet.

Very strong international growth! Looking at the top three areas US vs. rest of earth:

China + Turkey + Ontario > Michigan + California + Texas, comparing net teams added.

Looks like about 40% of the 2018 rookies are international, with 18% of FRC now being international.

Very interesting charts! Can you possibly normalize by the number of teams in each region?
