That's awesome that you released the native solidworks files. This will be a huge resource for teaching students. Thank You

Awesome! Gonna dig in and look at that feeder - we might do something similar this offseason.

Awesome resource, thank you guys so much for putting this together. Just so you know I believe pages 8 and 9 and included twice in the technical documentation.

Nooooo!!! There are a lot of similarly effective yet a lot simpler designs out there that you should be looking at first. 125 had a similar spinney thing that was a lot simpler. I was impressed at champs how simple but effective 1690's feeder was. I would start with something like that if we were to do this robot again.

Re: 971 CAD Release 2017!

After spending some time looking through your CAD there were some things that I noticed that I wanted to ask about and/or compliment you on. As I never got to see your robot up close.

1) The center piece of your feeder looks awesome! I'm a sucker for multi-axis machining so I'd like to know how you made that part.

2) Was your climber always powered when your intake ran or is there some PTO that I'm missing?

3) The rack and pinion shooter hood is pretty sweet. Any reason for that system versus a two position hood or a fixed hood?

A 971 mentor talking about doing the simple but effective route? Did the sun rise from the west today?

In all reality, Travis's advice is sound and you should probably look into doing a simpler solution (unless the goal is to push your team's limits by doing something crazy and fun)

Well, I'm leaning towards the 125 design, but I'm sure I can learn some stuff from yours .

Hi Thayer,

1) Thanks! One of our mentors has a CNC lathe at work, so he took a few students with him to machine them there. He ended up making three, one of which was fudged a little and will be at the IRI Auction! Unfortunately, I wasn't there for the machining of the center piece, so I can't tell you much more about it, other than the fact that it took many many hours! As for the design process, we initially had three smaller tubes and a 3D printed part as our vertical structure (which can be pictured here). However, as you can see from the photo, we ended up replacing that with a more rigid center piece at our first regional because testing on our practice robot showed that our original structure had too much wobble and was detrimental to our shooting accuracy.

2) You're right, our intake was powered the entire match while the ratchet was engaged. In order to solve the problem of back driving against the climbing ratchet, we used a one way bearing in the climbing gearbox, which is basically just another ratchet. This meant we could spin the intake in both directions, but it would only engage the shaft that spun the climber when intaking in (or out, I forget which way we geared it).

3) We wanted to be able to shoot from any distance away from the boiler without having to line up at a certain point. We accomplished this by creating a linear interpolation table which determined our shot angle from any distance away.

Re: 971 CAD Release 2017!

Thank you so much for releasing native SW files! I've wanted those from top tier teams for a long time and looking through your CAD will help me and the teams I mentor a ton!
Design is one thing, but technique is much harder to distinguish.

Re: 971 CAD Release 2017!

Thanks for the awesome resources!
- First of all I was really impressed by the Drivetrain's simplicity! The tubing-sheet metal hybrid seems like an elegant and smart solution. Can you approximate how often have you tensioned the chain?
- Was the pinion for the shooter adjustment custom made?
-Could you explain a bit about the choice to use the "Epicycloidal Gear" instead of "normal" gears or sprocket and chain?

Sure there will be some more questions in the near future!

Re: 971 CAD Release 2017!

One thing I've found that's really cool and I haven't seen be pointed out yet is the wheel on your serializer used to suck the balls up the center tube that's powered by a 775 pro in roller with what looks like a custom planetary gearbox (called the "Magical roller" in cad). Can someone from 971 comment on the design/manufacturing process that went into this and how it worked out for you? Were there any overheating issues caused by limited airflow?

This, along with the rest of the robot, is crazy cool to look at. Thanks for making this public.

Re: 971 CAD Release 2017!

Is there somewhere I can find more details about the kalman filter that you used?

I'm somewhat confused by this:

Quote:
Due to the heavy duty the shooter had to undergo this year, we had to extend the regular kalman filter that we have always used to get it to stabilize fast enough after a shot.
You say you had to "extend the regular kalman filter," but it doesn't sound like you're describing a standard EKF (although I could be wrong, since I've never actually implemented an EKF )

Is this what you're describing? If so, is there a paper or something that I can read that has more details?

I'm also confused as to what this means:

Quote:
This hybrid kalman filter takes into consideration the discrepancy between two individual time stamps in the sensors, allowing for a more accurate prediction step
What discrepancy in the timestamps is this referring to?

Thanks! I'm really interested in learning more about how this works
