Re: If You Could Choose Where the FIRST Championship Goes Next Where Would it Be?

Both Vegas and Indy have been commented multiple times and explained in detail the pros that both locations would provide to host a Champs event so I'll just repeat that they would be great locations.

Another I'll mention that hasn't been said much is NYC. While it is on one side of the country, and not centrally located as FIRST prefers, the abundances of cheap flights is no issue to find. The public transit, I'll say, is the best in the country, and hotels and other amenities are on every corner.

The three locations I'll list in possibility there are the Javits Center in Manhattan, the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, and MSG in Manhatten.

Both Barclays and MSG are used for both NBA and NHL (and smaller) so they are out for the time being because of playoffs in both sports during May and June.

The Javits Convention Center would be ideal though. Three floors (see floor plan below) of exhibition halls able to be used for pits, fields and all the expo we could et up, with bleachers able to be constructed, for all of FRC, FTC, FLL, JrFll. NYC-FIRST has previously used this venue for the NYC FRC regional, plus FTC and FLL and exhibits all going on together with tons of extra room.
Also if FIRST was dead set on using a baseball field (or other venue) for Einstein and awards, Yankee Stadium is a half hour train ride door to door, with minimal walking to and from the stations or Radio City Music Hall only a 20 min train ride.
The options are endless.

Javits is only 4 blocks or so from Penn Station/ Madison Square Garden...you could maybe do Einstein at the Garden.

Collectively, I've spent more than a year of my life in San Diego. I know the weather there. The historical averages are highs in the upper 60s all through April, and that's in the "colder" coastal portions of SD.

And NYC has the average temp of mid 60s through the month of April. Granted its no Atlanta or Houston, but its also not rural Maine.

Re: If You Could Choose Where the FIRST Championship Goes Next Where Would it Be?

Seeing that "South Champs" is the one that gets much more international traffic, and seeing that convention center Championship is now acceptable, you're nuts not to put Atlanta back in contention. You have one of the busiest airports in the world, a major hub for Delta and Southwest, with MARTA in between there and the GWCC, you have a very large convention space we weren't using all of, you've eliminated the Dome walk that people groused about, you have Mercedes-Benz Stadium for Einstein, so on so forth.

Indianapolis would also be a strong contender now, since the Indiana Convention Center and Lucas Oil Stadium are next door to each other (and have a corridor under the street). If I remember, one of the things that sunk their bid a decade ago was concerns about handling FLL and FTC that really no longer apply. IND is another excellent airport, with lots of healthy competition from several carriers (Delta, AA, United, Southwest, Alaska, if you like living dangerously Allegiant) to keep the fares down. It's also only about four hours out of Chicago, which opens up many more options for direct international flights.

Re: If You Could Choose Where the FIRST Championship Goes Next Where Would it Be?

Atlanta just became an even stronger candidate with the expansion of the Georgia World Congress Center! As mentioned in many other posts, transportation via MARTA is excellent, ATL is one of the biggest airports in the world, and there's the Mercedes-Benz Stadium (and also Phillips Arena) in the same complex. Although with the expansion plans for the GWCC, there honestly isn't a need to move over to a separate building for Einstein. It could be done similarly to how Einstein round-robin was done at Houston this year (using a couple division fields), or, since there's so much extra space in the GWCC, Einstein field(s) and bleachers could be setup completely separate of the division fields. That would allow for seating to wrap around all 4 sides of the Einstein area.

With Atlanta being in the far East side of the US, something like Las Vegas Convention Center or something in California would be ideal if there still have to be 2champs. That way it's East/West instead of North/South, which slightly better represents the distribution of teams (I think).

Re: If You Could Choose Where the FIRST Championship Goes Next Where Would it Be?

FYI, Las Vegas CC is in the process of adding 1.2 M sf to the current 3.2 M square foot complex (600,000 sf of new exhibit space)...ready sometime in 2020. Could possibly hold divisions and finals in one complex.

https://www.lvcva.com/convention-center-district/

Add a brand new $1.9B , 65-70,000 capacity stadium for the Raiders a few miles away. Could potentially house a unified championship actually

At the very least half the championships could go west.

Glenn Lee & I discussed this in July while in China together. We think that Indianapolis should hold BOTH Champs in sequence. FIRST would not need to disassemble the field, Indy does not have a baseball team using the facility, and it has similar centrality to NE North America as Detroit has. FIRST could save a tremendous amount of funds and may be even create a situation where the first-week winner could easily meet the second-week winner for an overall champion.

I'll put one recommendation against NYC for the following reasons:
  • Driving into NYC with a bus is a nightmare
  • Flying into NY is fine, but reaching Manhattan from any airport is way harder than it realistically needs to be (hope y'all remember Newark Penn Station vs New York Penn Station)
  • The last I heard (this is a total rumor, and not at all confirmed), Javitz was asking for $1 million for the NYC regional alone (65ish teams).
  • Hotels cost way too much in Manhattan and it's hard to stay outside due to the first bullet
