Manufacturability of Design Award

Here is a neat award idea (or perhaps off season white paper competition) based on translating students knowledge in designing FIRST robots into lean manufacturing experience.

It is very critical that students not only know how to design parts and assemblies, but also understand how they will be produced on a larger scale. Ideally that larger scale production would be as lean as possible.

So here is the background for the award / white paper competition:

Your robotics team is an engineering firm. You spent 6.5 weeks designing, and prototyping a robot. All for the release of your pilot robot (your competition robot), so now its time to review that pilot. Other awards already review its functionality, and style, but this award reviews the firms plan to take their pilot, and scale it into a production unit.

Teams will have a presentation where they will have to answer two questions

"If you were to go across the street and open a factory to produce X amount of your robot per week. What would that factory look like?"

"How did you work in design for manufacturing and assembly principles into the final design of your robot?"

Thoughts? I think it would be neat to just start this off as a white paper competition. I can't really offer much to the winner other than a 3d printed trophy.
