SCRIW VIII (South Carolina Robotics Invitational & Workshops 2018)

For the eighth straight year, FIRST Robotics Competition teams 1293 (Pandamaniacs) and 2815 (Blue Devil Mechanics) present:

SCRIW VIII
South Carolina Robotics Invitational and Workshops 2018

The Carolinas' oldest off-season tournament is back for a eighth awesome year, giving teams one more chance to play FIRST POWER UP in a near-official environment!

SCRIW is October 20, 2018, at Dreher High School in Columbia, South Carolina once again. We'll have a full one-day tournament on an official FIRST field, with an onsite FTA to ensure everyone has a great experience. With the faster inherent cycle times of this year's game, we expect we'll be able to give everyone plenty of matches while still retaining a pretty relaxed pace. (We'll know how many as the numbers firm up.)

Registration is $350 for registrations paid before July 1, and can be started online at http://scriw.org/team-registration-form/. After July 1, it goes to $400.

If you want to field a second robot for your team, B-team registration opens July 1 and is $200. Pre-rookies (teams that will be rookies in 2019) compete for free with your registration. Between the on-site workshops and the real-as-we-can-be competition format, it's the absolute best way to give your new students experience before the season begins!

We hope to see you there!

Re: SCRIW VIII (South Carolina Robotics Invitational & Workshops 2018)

We had a blast last year with my team and our rookie team and we plan to come back. Just one question! Is it SCIRW 7 or 8?

We're looking forward to it!

And this will be the eighth edition. We started in 2011 as the first off-season event in the Carolinas, and we continue to hold successful events thanks to the continued demand by the teams.

Even if I donít attend with a team, I hope to make it out to at least watch. We attended in 2016, and it was a blast! Itís great knowing we have an off-season in Columbia!

We run off-season events, we don't read roman numerals.

(Good catch. )

Re: SCRIW VIII (South Carolina Robotics Invitational & Workshops 2018)

This email just went out to the SCRIW team contacts:

Teams have been reaching out to us for details on this year's event, and we can share a few more things now.

1) The Schedule. Stop us if you've heard this one before:

0800: Pits open to teams
0801: Sync checks*
0940: Check-in closed (Once we make the schedule, that’s it.)
0945: Mandatory Driver’s Meeting On Field, Qualification Match Schedule Released
1000: Opening Ceremonies
1010: First Match
1200: Lunch Break
1235: Resume Qualification Matches
1500: End Qualification Matches
1505: Alliance Selection
1530: Elimination Rounds Start
1730: Elimination Rounds End (approximate)
1740: Awards (Finalists and Champions) & Breakdown

*After programming your radio, you’ll wheel your robot to the field and power it up on your cart under the FTA’s instructions to ensure your robot connects through FMS properly. We will not be running full practice matches, and we strongly encourage you to test your robot’s other systems at home and in the pit.

2) The Team List. We have one or two teams that are still pondering it over, but here is the current list:

281 The GreenVillains
283 The Generals
342 Burning Magnetos
1102 M'Aiken Magic
1225 The Gorillas
1398 Keenan Robo-Raiders
1553 KC Robotics Team
2815 Blue Devil Mechanics
3489 Category 5
3490 Viper Drive
3506 YETI Robotics
4451 ROBOTZ Garage
4533 Wando Advanced Robotics
4795 EastBots
4935 T-Rex
5327 Griffin Robotics
6366 RAM Rodz
7085 Paranoid Androids
9997 BeastBots (4795 B-Team)
9999 3489 B-Team
9998 1225 B-Team
9996 342 B-Team

3) Friendly Reminders For A Smooth Start To Your Event

Friendly reminder to the B-teams: Please shake down your robot with that team number in your driver station to ensure everything works, and do your best on bumpers for the sake of our field staff.

Friendly reminder to teams using LabVIEW and CAN motor controllers: Check the firmware on your motor controllers. There was an update released during the season that you may have missed if your season ended early enough.

Friendly reminder to everyone: Take your driver station and start working through these best practices (PDF link). It'll save you frustration and heartache at the event, especially if you've used the laptop for other things since the season ended.

4) The Mentor Match returns! We started the SCRIW mentor match at SCRIW V after flooding devastated parts of Columbia, and over the years we've raised well over $1,000 to help our friends and neighbors. This year, we'll be raising money for the FIRST North Carolina Hurricane Florence Robot Rescue fund. Buckets will be at each pit table, and the six teams that donate the most at the end of qualification rounds will be invited to a special match with all mentor drive teams. The match will be held after finals, because nobody's ever wanted to risk the shame of breaking the robot before playoffs. Student coaches are encouraged, and probably necessary.

North Carolina teams have been part of the fabric of SCRIW since the very beginning, so we hope you will donate generously.

5) Tournament structure. The last few years, we've utilized four alliances with four robots each for playoffs. It's worked well for the size of our event, as it lets us play more qualification matches and leaves a little room for us to absorb robots that are just plain worn out after a long season. We'll be doing it again this year, with lessons learned from past events:

There will be four alliance captains, and each alliance will have four teams on it.
Draft order is 1-4, 4-1, 1-4.
The alliance captain chooses which teams play each match, and in which station.
The team that sits out Semifinal 1 or Semifinal 2 (that is, each alliance's first semifinal match) must play in Semifinal 3 or Semifinal 4 (that is, each alliance's second semifinal match). For any Semifinal Tiebreaker matches and all Finals matches, it's the alliance captain's choice.

6) Call for workshop presentations. We always enjoy learning about awesome new concepts, and many of them get shared at our workshops! We'll release the final schedule a little closer to the event, but we do have 1-2 more spots available for presenters. If you're interested, do drop us a line ASAP.

7) Thank you! Whether this is the first time or the eighth time that you've joined us at SCRIW, we really appreciate you joining us this year. We've made it eight years without any financial backing from the regional committee--it's all your support and the grit of our host teams and volunteers. We can't wait to see you on the 20th!

If you have questions, don't hesitate to drop us a line.

Sincerely,

Billfred Leverette
SCRIW Planning Committee
