Re: Ideas to improve friendliness/graciousness on CD?

I would like to see the end of picture/gif based caption posts, especially those that comment on the discussion and not on the topic. These have been occurring relatively recently.

(EDIT: seriously though, communicating via GIFs is fun and I don't think any internet forum is going to be successful at banning reaction GIFs)

Re: Ideas to improve friendliness/graciousness on CD?

I don't see CD as being particularly hostile. There are a couple of people here who are, let us say, crotchety. There are some that rival Eeyore in their negative outlook.

But understand, I cut my social media teeth on Usenet. I was there for the coming of Perpetual September. I was there for the Meow Wars. I also spent a couple of years as a moderator on an IGN game forum. My idea of mildly hostile is perhaps a couple of orders of magnitude beyond what most here would consider obscene.

But I digress. I mentioned perpetual September because it's kind of the issue here. The tradition on Usenet, back when it was mostly universities' students and faculty, was that you would lurk on a newsgroup for a month or so, reading the discussions before posting anything. But each September freshmen would enter college and enter the discussions often throwing dead horses into the conversation, "let me tell you about my amazing insights into Beowulf, I'm sure that in hundreds of years of scholarship I'm the first to think of..." The freshmen would be scolded, told to RTFM and life would move on. (Then AOL happened and threw thousands of noobs per week onto the internet and it became perpetual September.)

Oftentimes I look at a post, that is the from a brand-new poster and say to myself, "no one could possibly be that clueless." Sometimes I even compose a response filled with snark. Then I delete it because it does nothing to advance the conversation and much to drag it down.

These are not 18-year-old college freshmen, they are 14-year-old high school freshmen. They don't know better and it's up to us to teach them, to dare I say, mentor them.

But you don't do that by throwing insults and negative reputation at them.

You do it by engaging them and explaining patiently how they could have found the answer and guiding them to it. Yes, you have to do it over and over and over again. It's the same question, but it's a different person each time, so taking out your frustration at seeing the same question asking, "is Velcro a rope" on the latest low count poster does nothing but feed your own ego.

With all of that said, it would be nice if there were better sticky posts we could direct newcomers to. Consider https://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/s...ad.php?t=50532 it should be the thread we direct these freshmen to, but it devolves into an inside joke thread with the second response. There's good advice there, but it's mixed with a lot of dross.

Same with the Forum Announcement post at the top. https://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/a...ement.php?f=16 it's literally links to TL;DR.

Perhaps it's time to crowdsource a new locked sticky post that covers the basics or CD forum etiquette.

(I though long and hard about posting this because it is somewhat scolding and negative, but it is something I feel needs to be said if we're going to make CD better.)

It is REALLY hard to resist the urge to respond to this with an animated gif... several others have already. I'll resist the urge and take the higher road though (mostly because a former student that I respect A WHOLE AWFUL LOT started this thread).

Why is posting animated gifs bad?

Further, why is posting gifs about the meta discussion bad?

Even further, why is having a meta discussion bad (because I clearly think that bothers you based on your post)?

Anytime you want to "ban" something - think long and hard about why. Generally there are better solutions. In this case, you can block animated gifs via browser extension if they bother you. If you're trying to argue that meta discussion is bad then perhaps forum discussions are not for you because they tend to be meandering and sidewinding anyway.

Sidewinding meandering discussion doesn't bother me. Posting an animated gif along with a post on point (responding to the OP or another post in the thread) doesn't bother me. It's exactly the image only posts that have no discussion value that are annoying.

If I simply posted the text in any of those images, such as "Dis Gun B Gud", and nothing else, how would that be viewed? Does the person carrying the chair sticking their tongue out mean it's OK to post essentially nothing?

To be fair - you are calling out image based posts when there are tons of examples of exactly that - people posting "dis gun be gud" or "grabs popcorn". Look at the plethora of "water game" posts. None of those contribute towards a discussion yet they are part of the zeitgeist of CD.

I don't recall seeing a water game post popping up in the middle of a passionate/difficult discussion (as the captioned images typically do), but I'm sure I'd be equally annoyed.

Fair enough...

So here's my suggestion... I'd like to see people say polite things to each other even though they might disagree such as...

I see your point and I can certainly understand how images and comments that don't add much to the discussion could be annoying but I feel like I'd rather see a completely open discussion than one limited to a particular scope, even if that does mean going off topic or having to see meme images repeatedly.

Re: Ideas to improve friendliness/graciousness on CD?

I will personally mourn the loss of animated GIFs provided as a response.

Sarcasm really needs the extra bandwidth provided by both the visual aspect and the animated aspect of the GIF. Imagine having to read a textual description of the animated GIF, that would definitely kill a great thread.

Typically the popcorn gazelle and dis gun b gud gifs serve as warnings that there's dragons here and a topic is beaten to death. But it's trying to be a little clearer that it's not meant in a mean way.

Typically I take most of the gifs as joking ways of saying their content. And, this may be so anti-curmudgeon of me but I like emoji as a way of conveying emotion. It adds more than a wall of text that won't get read ever will.

I have an immediate and strong negative reaction to almost every animated GIF I see here.

The animated bilge is almost always intended to convey a snarky/snide comment, IMO. For me posting them is just another form of playing "grab-$@#$@#$@#" instead of accomplishing something. Anything they would convey, can be conveyed just as well by text, without the, "I'm making fun of you baggage" the GIFs usually (almost always) carry.

For me meta-discussions almost always fall into the same general category, except that they have a spin of people using the public forum (and the time of everyone reading them) for gabby, we-are-watching-you-other-folks-from-our-special-peanut-gallery, inside-jokes and other cliquishness that should be carried on somewhere else. CD shouldn't be viewed as the pet location for any small group of people to mix their chit-chat into conversations hundreds of readers are following.

You asked - I answered. YMMV

Blake
PS: Don't forget to stay off my lawn too.
PPS: I added the PS to keep things a little light, but I'm serious about how many people perceive the GIFs and "meta" conversations. For me they are definitely a form of "perpetual September".
