Re: Battlebots Season 3!

I'm going to hijack this thread to shout out some of the smaller competitions.

For students who've just graduated from their FRC team and have a robotics shaped hole in their life, instead of going straight to becoming a mentor or starting a Ri3D team I'd strongly recommend considering becoming involved in combat robotics. The insect weight classes (150g, 1lb and 3lb) are all very manageable for one person to do on ~$300 budget and much less of a commitment compared to mentoring while in post secondary.

It's very accessible, some of the best robots in the world are 3d printed. There's no silly bag and tags to deal with and while combat robots can be very complimentary to the FRC skill set, it can also introduce you to numerous other skills like material properties and high power brushless motors. Having personal projects to show off can be great for a portfolio.

If your interested in finding more info the Combat Robotics FB page is a good place to start. If you happen to be in and around the Greater Toronto Area we host an event called Bot Brawl which a ton of FRC people compete at (5406, 2609, 1360, 865, 115, 4907, 4914). We even have people coming up from Michigan and NY state to compete.

You can also PM me if you have any questions and I'll try my best to respond.

Wish I had extra time and monies. I'd bring something cool up north.

You totally should! Your in a good spot too, there are a bunch of events held nearby in Pennsylvania at Penn College, The Franklin Institute and huge competition for 150g-30lbs at Motorama in Harrisburg (200+ robots!)

Re: Battlebots Season 3!

Speaking as someone who's been involved with Battlebots, please realize that there are significant differences to the design approach between an FRC bot and a Battlebot.
FRC bots focus on control, extended durability (over a more significant amount of run time), and more precise weight/dimensional management.

The majority (but not all) of Battlebots are heavily armored RC cars. They run simple Spektrum-type radio receivers signaling heavy duty speed controllers or contactors with the goal to deliver as much energy as possible into their weapon and drive system. Outside that, add heavy/thick armor with a creative structural design that can either deflect or distribute impact energy through the body (rather than the electronics/batteries) and you have a Battlebot. Reliability in Battlebots is surviving sudden impacts (large amount of energy dissipation in small amounts of time), long-duration durability is not important. In many Battlebots, designing a weapon system that delivers an impact without destroying its own body can be one of the biggest challenges.

Teams like Tombstone and Minotaur are so successful because the bot is simple ("dumb") but disperses impact energy well and have unique clutch mechanisms (Minotaur uses 4 V-belts with a redundant motor setup, Tombstone uses a heavily modified drive-sprocket clutch) in their weapon designed to prevent both electrical drive and mechanical impulse energy reaction. In both of these examples, the robots have a ~1000 amp weapon run-up current but at full speed, energy transfer is purely kinetic and practically disassociated from the motor.

Combat robotics is a great thing to get involved with, but just realize their design approaches are completely different from FRC.

Shall I point to the aluminum kitbot Double Jeopardy put together to create their mobile single-shot cannon? ;-)

Motorama, Franklin institute, Bot brawl and AVC all have non-KE (no spinners) 30lb classes that are much more suited to the FRC design style.
