We can have some robots shoot tennis balls at a goal while others have to block the balls from getting in with tennis rackets or something. It could be dangerous though

Steamworks, but robots launch water balloons instead of wiffle balls.

6 inches of ping pong balls! I don't care what the objective is!

27' x 54' x x 0.5' = 729 ft^3
74.048% theoretical max fill for equal spheres = 539.81 ft^3

40mm ball = 0.0135 ft^3

~39,908 balls in play!
Keep 4-5 extras in case some get smashed

Put a steel frame and wire mesh 8' above the floor (ceiling).
Do not allow any drivetrains. Mobility must come from grabbing the ceiling and swinging.

Re: Cool ideas for a future FIRST game

I think a game that teams had to shoot a thick rope would be interesting.

It would reuse a field element from 2017, it would be a completely new challenge, and could be a wild west themed game, since FIRST is now themeing them.

I want that so bad!!! It probably would go terribly wrong in some way like a water game could but we all want a water game anyway because it would be so much fun!!!

Re: Cool ideas for a future FIRST game

Aim High, again, with modern robot construction. I know the GDC is loathe to repeat games, but think about how different things are now compared to then.

Here's the list of motors that you were allowed to use in 2006:

4x CIM
2x Big CIM (slower, torquier, heavier)
2x Window Motors
1x Mabuchi paperweight motor
1x Van door motor
2x Fisher-Price Motor (analogous to the modern AndyMark 9015)
2x Globe Motor (think a BAG at 100:1)

Oh, and the only notable off-the-shelf gearbox options are the OG AndyMark Shifter, the AM Toughbox (12.75:1 only), and the kit single-speed gearbox that IFI sold that was also 12.75:1 and whose only real issue (to Americans, anyway) was the metric-sized output shaft.

And you were pretty much on your own for feedback options, though IFI's excellent breaker panel did report trips (I think it was trips?) over a serial port.

And vision was juuuuuuust starting to get relevant, since the illuminated vision target was much better to work with.

Now, tell me that game (which, if it isn't in your top 5 of the 3v3 era, you're wrong) isn't ripe for a do-over with all the modern power we have available. It would make the Poofs' 2017 machine look like amateur hour.

And if you don't want to make it a straight do-over, just put a second goal in the back of the first for five points. There, it's different.

This sounds a lot like that Chinese robotics competition from over the summer and I really like it.
