The MARtian: MidKnight Mayhem 2017

For some, the Houston and St. Louis Super Regionals feel like just yesterday. For others, it feels like it has been years. But don’t worry, the first 2017 off-season of MAR is here to help you remember that robots (and MAR) still exist, and the MARtian is back to give you MARginally Accurate predictions for your off-season events.

Do you feel that? The Mayhem is rising… are you ready? The 5th annual MidKnight Mayhem is upon us this Saturday sporting many of our favorite teams and some teams from next door. If STEAMworks wasn’t STEAMPOWERED enough for you, our friends at 1923 have their very own MAYHEM RULE to spice up the action. Teams like our hosts have also improved their robots featuring new auto modes, and many seniors will be look for their last hurrah as MAR says goodbye to the graduating class of 2017.

If robots were not enough, come to MAR's Annual Meeting at 2 PM! For those unaware, there are four outgoing directors from the MAR Board: Joe Giardina, John Giardina, Carol Perrotto, and Bill Tompkins. Thank you all for your service! Since only 4 candidates applied for these open positions, the following candidates have been endorsed by the MAR Board and will be the incoming directors, with no election being held. Congratulations to Steve Compton, Paul Kloberg, Ali Marinari, and Gene O’Brien, and MAR looks forward to seeing you soon! According to the most recent email sent out, the agenda for tomorrow's meeting will be posted on the MAR website, but the agenda page does not seem to have been updated since January.

Meet the Teams

First off, congratulations to the teams invited to the 2017 Indiana Robotics Invitational! Every year, the IRI invites around eighty of the top teams in the world to face off in Indianapolis in what is essentially the all-star game of FRC. MAR will be cheering on teams 1676, 2590, 225, 1640, and 365 from home as they represent the Mid-Atlantic region among the best-of-the-best. Four of these teams, as well as 191, will be warming up at MidKnight Mayhem this weekend:
  • World Champion third round pick: 1676
  • 2013, 2014, and 2017 MAR District Champions: 2590
  • MAR’s only 40 kPa shooter yet still shooting for their first win of 2017: 225
  • Fresh off their third Einstein trip in five years (all as second picks): 1640
  • Coming all the way from Rochester after their first event win since 2012: 191

MAR District Event Winners:
  • Two event wins in their first two seasons: 5895
  • Hatboro winners and perennial contenders: 2607
  • Six events, four #1 alliances, two wins: 303
  • Rain drop, drop top - two district wins in 2017 and our gracious hosts: 1923
  • Won Montgomery as the 8th seed captain: 75

Visitors from NYC:
  • Tech Valley Regional Winners and NYC Regional finalist first pick: 333
  • Won HVR on the #8 alliance: 369
  • NYC finalist second pick: 4571

Still trying to match last year’s successes:
  • Missed Champs for the first time since 2006: 1218
  • Looking to make it past quarters: 1257
  • Have yet to reach their full potential: 5624

Other contenders:
  • Captained two alliances to the finals this season: 219
  • Stepped up their game for STEAMworks: 555
  • Montgomery finalist captain: 11
  • Tesla finalist second round pick: 193

The clock is ticking, but who will be victorious as the clock strikes midnight at this year’s MidKnight Mayhem? See you there!
