Suffield Shakedown Scrimmage

I almost forgot to post this; Suffield Shakedown Scrimmage will once again be held on Feb 17th @ Suffield High School. At this point it looks like we will playing on just the NE District perimeter field & use practice components. For anyone partaking in the scrimmage please contact Linda Horn for specifics on what components you can volunteer. We will also need as usual volunteers for the field reset & dismantling. Looking forward to seeing all the great teams that participate in this fun event.

Re: Suffield Shakedown Scrimmage

Looking forward to this great event! We've had a great time, and have been able to iron out a lot of kinks in our bot thanks to this event in the past two years. Thanks for putting it on once again!

Will this event be livestreamed and/or will match videos be available? If so, where will they be posted?

Team 230 usually streams it. They will post it on their website. It's usually not archived.

Thanks for the info! I got in contact with a media coordinator for team 230 and it looks like the livestream is probably not going to happen this year.

If anyone has any information about match videos or other livestreams please let me know!

Re: Suffield Shakedown Scrimmage

With sadness I regret to announce that the Suffield Shakedown Scrimmage has been cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances. It has been hard these past 5 years trying to provide a quality competition for the teams that have participated. The logistics of getting all the field components in time for the Scrimmage has gotten harder each year due to the complexity of the games. With more teams throughout the world FIRST has many 3rd party component providers & getting these to events for week 1, let alone week 0 has been more difficult. I can't say if there will be any more Scrimmages in Suffield in the coming years, but I can tell you I am devastated about this. I have been doing this since February 2003 when I was "volunteered" by my older son to help out, not knowing what I was getting myself into. I wouldn't give any of it up!
It has been a blast & I have made many friends over the years from the Scrimmage. It also expanded me in my involvement into volunteering at many events throughout CT, MA, NH & ME. I will still be volunteering as usual at events in NE District.

I can't begin to describe how I feel about this long running pre-season competition not being held this year.

I wrote many thoughts but decided not to express them here.

I have a few as well. None of them towards the great work & sacrifice that Aces High has endured over the years. It always took great effort & resources to have the scrimmage at the end of build season.

Re: Suffield Shakedown Scrimmage

Thanks for all the years that Ace's High has run this event. First hosted long before any other Week Zero event was even thought of, we knew we were going to be able to try our robot out at a well run event.

Re: Suffield Shakedown Scrimmage

Sad day to see this is not happening, it had become part of the fabric of the season for us - we always knew we had to get a robot working for the scrimmage (even though some years not exactly working!) and would drive us to get done.

Admittedly since FIRST no longer would support providing a real field for it, it had lost some of its benefit, but it was a time when we could all get together and see a glimpse of what everyone had been working on, generally a fun event!

Thanks to Aces High, and Linda Horn, for providing this for all these years! We look forward to seeing everyone at the CT events!.

Re: Suffield Shakedown Scrimmage

Our team is quite saddened by this. Shakedown saved our butts 2016 by showing us a weak link in our design. We left there and got to work.

I am personally grateful to you folks for doing the shakedown year after year.

Here is to the hope of shakedown returning next year.

Re: Suffield Shakedown Scrimmage

I'm sad to see this great event get cancelled. I remember the event so fondly from my days on 173, and the fact that it was always available to compete against a great group from southern New England every year. I will never forget the time that 173 won the scrimmage two years in a row, (2003/2004) with the same robot. It helped get so many strategies worked out early in the season, and got teams working towards unifying before Districts were even thought of. I wish FIRST would have continued their support of this event, even after they decided to move the "official" week 0 to New Hampshire. I know Suffield Shakedown is the reason that many pre-week 1 rule changes happened.

A huge thank you to all the folks at Aces High (not to mention all the other volunteers from the community who supported it for so long!) for all the work you have done over the last 15+ years to make this great event happen! I hope in the future you are able to make it happen again.

Re: Suffield Shakedown Scrimmage

like all others, i'm really sad to hear that this event got cancelled. our team owes a lot to this event as it was a huge stepping stone towards our first blue banner last year. i've only attended once but i had a great time and i really commend aces high for all the hard work they had put into this event since the beginning.

I'm really sorry to hear the event won't take place this year. I know our team always enjoys watching it.

Thank you to you and Ace's High for being such an inspiration to all the other teams holding week 0 events. Your team really blazed the path for many others.

Re: Suffield Shakedown Scrimmage

I will add Team 230 to the list of teams who looked forward to attending each year. I personally attended for 11 years and am sad to see it go. It was definitely an advantage for us in CT to have the event here and we all tried to support it to the best of our abilities. But we understand your pain as things have changed (like the removal of FIRST support). I'm sure it has become more and more difficult to provide a quality experience that is worth the time you have to put into the setup and organization especially during crunch-time during a much-too-short build season.

We will miss seeing everyone there, but hope to see you all at the CT events.
