550,000 viewers. Not great, but the CBS Sports Spectacular never does particularly well.

'Not great' against which other comparable broadcast?

What would you consider to be great? 550,000 viewers seems like a crap ton of people to me. The same Vex special had 129k viewers last year. This seems like a dramatic improvement to me.

It also beat out all but one the college baseball coverage on ESPN. What would you have personally expected to see for ratings?

Some of that can certainly be attributed to a move from ESPN2 to CBS; the latter obviously has more households that get it. Weekend afternoons are generally a better time to stumble onto sports than a weeknight too. Being a lead-in to golf coverage (which draws far better than I expected--#3 on Sunday behind NASCAR and the Stanley Cup finals) certainly helped them too.

Any way you care to slice it, up is up. Hats off to that!

This is correct. ESPN2 is available in approximately 89 million households, compared to approximately 111 million households for CBS.1

The Camera-work at IRI 2014 was superb if I recall. You're definitely right in that it's harder to capture exactly what's going on in other years, where there can't be a focus on a specific area of the field.

Similarly, the 2014 Michigan State Championship special done by Detroit Public Broadcasting was superb.

That being said, in a televised format months after the event, I think people could look at the footage from various angles on the field and find the right angles to show at different times, even in a game like Steamworks.

550K viewers looks pretty good to me. It looks to be right in line, or slightly better than ratings for other uncommon sports broadcasts. If you look at ratings on Sunday afternoons outside of NFL and college basketball season, there are a ton of minor sports broadcasts, things like non-NASCAR automotive events, non money making college sports (Not football or basketball), extreme sports, or things like bowling or darts. It seems to compare pretty favorably with these other broadcasts. The next goal in my opinion would be to see the broadcast reach similar ratings as the Scripps Spelling Bee (850K-1Million).

It is tough to make a once a year show a big draw without a lot of advertising. If you catch someones attention this year, it is tough to retain them next year, or if the show comes up at the water cooler, the odds of it spreading are pretty low because there isn't an option to watch the next episode. These types of specials are meant to hold some interest and occupy air time, and it seems like it did its job.

Re: VEX Worlds on CBS June 11 at 2pm!

Maybe some of the younger folks on here don't remember, but FIRST was on ESPN many years back. It was done like a typical broadcast with two commentators, etc. My humble opinion is that it all comes down to money. My understanding is VEX purchase the time slot from CBS to run the special, and spent about $1M on the special. I don't see FIRST doing this. You can see one of the ESPN broadcasts here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T8N6lnle1fc

You may need to check your sources on this one. I'm not privy to discuss the details I'm familiar with, but I can assure you that nowhere close to $1,000,000.00 was spent.

Re: VEX Worlds on CBS June 11 at 2pm!

I loved the show, the camera work was good, the announcing was very good (both Paul and Karthik, looked and sounded like pros). Good action and background on the roboteers.

Hope next year they can do a 30 mins show on VEX-IQ.

I'm using it as advertising for my high schools to get them involved.

Re: VEX Worlds on CBS June 11 at 2pm!

I thought the special was really well done. You can only cram so much into an hour and I liked how they focused on telling stories of individual teams to engage the everyday viewer.

For those who have never been to VEX Worlds, I'd highly recommend making the trip. It is tough for some with FRC champs conflicting but I still think VEX puts on a fantastic show and I still think it's the best robotics championship experience out of any program. Come on down to Louisville next year!

I really hope so as well! VEX IQ is adorable and the robots can be extremely competitive and creative. In my heart VEX IQ is the favorite. It might be harder to follow a team's journey in IQ but it sure would be cute.
