Go to Post Just take a chance. Dream and live. It's not a wild decision, but just ask yourself - if I got my team just a little bit more spending money, where would my team be then? Then, change that dream into a reality. Help your team sustain itself to inspire more kids. - CalTran [more]

What a necropost. And it was even explicitly for the sake of necroposting!

Re: Atlanta tornado discussion

Putting on my "real job" (severe weather / tornado research) hat:

I wasn't involved in FIRST at the time, but I remember the event well, and one of my current coworkers was involved in the damage assessment afterwards as well as the warning operations during the event.

This event was a real wake-up call to the mangers of large venue and especially collegiate sports organizations (e.g. college stadium managers) about safety issues associated with severe weather. If the basketball game had not gone into overtime, then a lot more people would probably have been out in the street exposed to the tornado, lighting, and other effects. Since then, many venues have established an emergency plan and monitor the weather more closely than before. Unfortunately, we still have a long ways to go.

Upon searching the web sites for the Detroit and Houston convention centers, I see no information about safety and emergency plans. St. Louis does have some information to help event hosts with planning. The 2018 FIRST Championship iOS App just says "Coming Soon" under its safety section. So maybe they are thinking about it, but it seems we have a ways to go.

Now back to your normally scheduled robots.

Re: Atlanta tornado discussion

10 years, went like a flash. The Georgia dome is a small pile of rubble, and the beautiful new Mercedes-Benz Stadium is several hundred feet further from the world congress center. I wonder if they plan to build a longer tunnel...

Now I live in Atlanta, whod'a thunk it?

Re: Atlanta tornado discussion

The three years of going to the world championship in Atlanta was the best World Championship experiences I’ve ever had, and I’ve been to STL and Houston since. I have a feeling that there won’t be another world championship that comes close for some time.

Re: Atlanta tornado discussion

For what it is worth. It's a nice if somewhat blustery day here in Atlanta.
