Re: 2019 Game Speculation

I like the trend we are on. 2015 was a low point, but at least it showed the GDC wasn't stagnating and was trying to address problems. Since then things have gotten progressively better each year, to the point where 2018 is my new favorite game. Keep it up, GDC!

Re: 2019 Game Speculation

Since we know the theme, I suppose it's time for some of my predictions, namely:
  • Endgame is mining-related
  • Not a ball game
  • Floor is not carpet
  • Themed name for field is "Asteroid" or similar

Angry Re: 2019 Game Speculation

A couple quick guesses:

Just like the space race, collaboration is key to success. Alliance play is emphasized even more.
Minibots return

And one bold, very unlikely case:

The game is actually a race. Just like in the space race, a single misstep could kill your hopes of winning. Match time is still 2:30, but there is a finite number of tasks to be competed and there are no points. Instead, all that matters is how fast you finish all of the tasks as an alliance.

Guys hear me out: It is a Underwater Game. Underwater simulations are used for zero gravity, so its a underwater game. Also the world champs get on the first ride to Mars.

Re: 2019 Game Speculation

It would be interesting to have a field with rocky terrain (like that of an asteroid), though it significantly hamper the creation of precise automodes. It could be difficult to maintain and/or assemble it too.

I highly doubt anything that requires a modified drivetrain, as that is the only full subsystem that is in the KOP. Almost all rookie teams use the KOP driveteams, and many veterans do as well, so this would be a major disadvantage to those teams.

Re: 2019 Game Speculation

My predictions:

Climbing OR the start of the match will be called "liftoff" (similar to the 3...2...1... Power Up! this year).

Shooting will be a major game element, although the game element for shooting will not be as small as the wiffle balls from 2017.

There will be a random field setup in autonomous.

254 will have 100% unicorn matches.

I won't say those won't happen, just I hope it isn't shooting balls and climbing again. Veteran teams have already figured out those challenges, and changing the hight of a bar or size of a ball doesn't change the concept. I really liked this year that there was only one element to move, but multiple ways to use it. We have had shooting/launching balls two of the last three seasons (including Power Up) and climbing in all three. Skipping Recycle Rush, you had more shooting balls in 2014, although they were huge and not the conventional style.

But in the end, there are only so many different shapes to pick up, and ways to place those objects. So it is clear that some ideas need to repeat occasionally.

I'm wondering if we will be loading cargo into a rocket or space ship. Moving different sized or shaped objects into a human player operated zone for sorting and placement. I'm obviously not a game designer, so beyond that vague idea I have no clue, but that is my far fetched idea.

I actually did compete in FRC 2017, and I what I saw was that the shooting was not already developed because the objects were smaller than previous years and many balls could be picked up at once. The only non-ball shooting game object in recent years was a frisbee, and that game was really fun according to people who competed in it. I doubt FIRST would use wiffle balls again, so they would probably use something new. The only new things they can really use that are easily accessible everywhere that I can think of are badminton shuttlecocks, hockey pucks, arrows (blunted and made of foam, of course), and rugby balls, all of which are irregularly shaped. This would be different than other ball-type intakes and shooters where a ball would need to be picked up in many configurations (like this year with the cube) and aligned to one direction to be shot. Shooting games are also something programming heavy and, as a programmer, I think that is a way more fun challenge than more autos.

Maybe the element can be both shot into a target and delivered to a cargo ship? That would be interesting especially if you could remove balls from the enemy cargo ship and put them in your side or shoot them out of the field into a goal. Then teams would be encouraged to build subsystems centered around defense, something more complicated than the "maneuverable drivetrain and a good driver" defensive strat from the past few years.

The 2019 game will be identical to Steamworks but the airships will be rockets.
