Black Bumpers

This year we have reversible bumpers that are red on one side, and when flipped with Velcro are blue on the other. On the sides of our bumpers we have black (a neutral color). Is this ok?

Quote:
R27. Each ROBOT must be able to display Red or Blue BUMPERS to MATCH their ALLIANCE color, as assigned in the MATCH schedule distributed at the event (as described in Section 10.1 MATCH Schedules). BUMPER Markings visible when installed on the ROBOT, other than the following, are prohibited:
A. those required per R28,
B. hook-and-loop fastener or snap fasteners backed by the hard parts of the BUMPER,
and
C. solid white FIRST logos between 4 in. (~13 cm) and 5 in. wide (~13 cm) (i.e. comparable to those distributed in the 2017 Kickoff Kit) and available in 2018 FIRST
Choice.
I don't see black mentioned anywhere in there. If I was the LRI at your event, I would make you cover it up with red/blue.

Re: Black Bumpers

As I read it, the black strip on top black falls under R27b, provided that it is hook-and-loop fastener and only covers the lumber and metal parts of your bumpers. The black at the "end" of the bumper covering the cut face of the noodles does not.

Additionally, Your bumpers appear in the photo to be violating R30C, in that the noodle on top appears to be a larger diameter than the noodle beneath; perhaps it's just a strange perspective.

They definitely violate R30D, in that I can see that the top noodle is pink. The cloth does not completely enclose all exterior surfaces of the wood and pool noodle material when the bumper is installed on the robot.

Re: Black Bumpers

My team has been using reversible bumpers for the last couple seasons. The black velcro on ours shows just like your picture, but we have never gotten in trouble for it.

It's not the velcro that's the issue.

Look at the end of the bumper.

Re: Black Bumpers

edit: I realize you mean the part where the noodles are. Yeah, you are going to need to cover those in red/blue.

Re: Black Bumpers

in addition to the above, what are the staples in the bottom right going in to? there should not be staples in the noodly areas.

Re: Black Bumpers

We used reversible bumpers with velcro for years. Last year, the lead inspector at District Championships made us remove the velcro that wasn't "backed by the hard parts of the bumper" as stated in R27. So, some inspectors may let that sort of thing pass, but sooner or later you'll probably have to fix it.
