Never said it wasnt always like that, I just had an over-inflated idea of what the competition is like.

There really is no comparison of the grandiose feeling of walking into an NFL stadium vs a convention floor with bleachers.

Re: Houston Venue

Maybe one day, a "perfect" venue will be designed and built around hosting robotics competitions instead of a football game (or trade show).

Re: Houston Venue

Those metal bleachers don't look very comfortable to sit in for hours straight. Adds to the high school gym feel.

I think that's exactly what it is, honestly. Cheesy metal bleachers in a 2-story tall building in a very well-lit building just feels way less grand than, say, 2015 did. The spotlights on the field highlighted the action, and if an important person came onto the field you could see them. Production value has value, IMO

This might be an unpopular opinion around these parts, but I think FIRST is doing a good job.

Re: Houston Venue

Coming from the pnw district championship, worlds feels less like a championship and more like a big robotics convention. I don't necessarily hate it, it's still an incredible experience but it's just not the same. I wish that there was an uber-competitive event that could replicate the competitiveness of district champs with all of the best teams worldwide, but to that shrinks the amount of people who would be able to get the other, less competition based experiences from champs

Re: Houston Venue

For divisional play, at least the stands look a lot roomier than what FIRST gave us in 2011!

TBH though, I think the real test drive on this layout will come tomorrow during division elims and Einstein pt 1.

I like the GRB a lot. It's actually a pretty classy place. My issue is with Minute Maid Park.

Re: Houston Venue

More practice fields. It is honestly pretty pathetic that they only have basically 2 fields for teams to run on. The pieces of carpet are way less than adequate for most of what people need to practice.

I dont think anyone actually disagrees with this. (as long as we ignore MMP) I had a blast last year, got to meet tons of new teams and people and compete with some of the best. It just seems overhyped in some aspects, and it definitely a little underwhelming when you first arrive.

Re: Houston Venue

Having the bleachers close into the field is nice, lots of energy from the crowd is making it down to the fields.

The noise bleed over is not bad as some were predicting. You can hear the other fields, but you definitely know the sound effects that belong to your field.

Is definitely cool having fields on either side, or looking down the length of GRB and seeing all the fields.

The long walks from one end of GRB to the other is killer, good thing I only need to do it 3-4 times a day. Not sure how it compares to places like STL or ATL for the teams, especially for Newton and Carver. Seems like less of a walk than previous locations.

All in all, I'd give it a thumbs up, with the expected exception of MMP, still to be experienced.
