[TBA Blog] How We Provided Real-Time Results at Championship 2015

You may remember that there were some issues surrounding match results getting posted from FMS at Championship 2015. This caused a 2 AM TBA coding session where we implemented the first prototypes of what would become the TBA EventWizard. This allowed us to crowdsource match results from people in the stands and deliver them to the site's users.

We reconstructed a timeline of events. It's a good story, give it a read

You folks were a lifesaver at Champs 2015. Thanks again for working through the night solely to make things easier for the community. I think it's easy for us to forget how much work must go into everything that's provided by TBA, and that's entirely done by volunteers. I can't imagine going through a season without all the services provided by TBA. (e.g. Centrally stored and easy to access results archives, live streamed events, standings projections, push notifications, etc.)

I agreed with Karthik and Adam. TBA is one of FRC's most important resources, the team behind it is amazing and I can't thank you all enough and these blogs are always a good read.

Does FIRST actively contribute in some way to TBA? I can't imagine TBA going away - I visit it every couple weeks to grab information. It's a staple of FRC to me.

If FIRST doesn't contribute - they should start. There are times folks should realize just how much an outside organization adds, and TBA is it for FRC.

I imagine the warning on the FRC district-ranking site is still for TBA:

But seriously, moving to a publicly documented API that anyone can use over manually scraping a HTML page or twitter are gigantic moves from my POV considering many large services don't have a public API (Pandora, Instagram, etc.) Even if FIRST doesn't officially comment on it, I'm glad their jobs have been made *considerably* easier.

Plus, I know quite a few volunteers (see CSA / FTAA / FTA) who contribute to TBA on their own time.

Being able to do that wouldn't have been possible without the scouting teams in the dome (1114 included) who took the extra time to submit results after each match. Those teams show why the FRC community is amazing - we just gave them a platform to share a slice of their scouting data

No, development of TBA is not associated with FIRST staff. We sometimes coordinate with them on what we should expect from their datafeeds and report bugs to each other. Many of the FMS development team even use GameDay while they're supporting events!
