Only Rectangles vs Reflective tape

I was wondering if it will be reliable to go about just tracking the rectangles using its shape instead of tracking the retro reflective tape. Is this valid to use is, say, u were to use this in the matches. Are there any other rectangular shape that it might see besides the rectangles on blue and red alliance?

Just curious, thats all.

Re: Only Rectangles vs Reflective tape

Many robots will be rectangular. The team number and match time displays are rectangular. Any nearby video displays. Windows.

Why not use the targets provided? They're easier to discriminate.

Re: Only Rectangles vs Reflective tape

Having the camera looking up in the shop we're using (the high school wood shop), we found a whole bunch of rectangles! and most of them are some shade of white. So we're going to play with colored LEDs and see how that works.

Re: Only Rectangles vs Reflective tape

As already covered, the color alone, and shape alone, probably aren't unique enough. You could certainly make an offseason demo that was in a controlled setup, and be successful with very simple code. But the FIRST field is a comparatively unfriendly place. That is why the sample code and paper talk about a number of measurements that can be made to score the likelihood of that being the target. You can then decide how you want to vote with the scores and make a decision.
