Jaugar Question?
Hi this my teams first year in this competition and I had one vital question. For ever motor I attempt to mount, whether it be 5v, 10v, 12v will I have to attach a Jaguar in order to have robotic control over the motor or is there a different option.

To control motors there are three options. Two are variable speed the other is fixed speed. Motors either need to connect to a Jaguar or Victor for variable speed control, or to a Spike (forward full, back full, off / brake). In the past we have not usually used spikes for the motors other than a compressor, but for the lower speed motors they should work OK. I would not hook a CIM up to a spike as it amperage draw is too high. If you use a spike, make sure the amperage drawn is within the fuse and wiring limits for a spike.
Spikes are not PWM controlled, but connect to the relay block on the digital side car. Check the wiring diagrams they will show how they connect (compressor is a good example). They do use the same cable though. All motors should be 12 volt motors other than the one bane bot motor which is a 18v, but can run at 12. Servos will be 5 volt and run off the PWM signal and power on the digital side car. (as an additional note, I did not dig through all the rules for this post, so your mileage may vary. No. You do not have to attach a Jaguar. You can also attach a Victor or a Spike, or in the case of a VEX motor, there is a VEX speed control.
I would suggest reading Section 4.1.8 of the Manual very carefully, particularly [R48], [R50], and [R51]. That is the allowed motors list (and I would note, no motors in that list are 5V or 10V that I know about), the rule governing exactly what controls the motors, and the rule governing what speed control devices are legal to be used to control motors. |
