Picking up from both sides

A subject came up at our meeting today about making it so we have the ability to pick up balls from both sides. It would require no extra pulleys, etc., however would leave the entire middle part of our robot open, relying on other currently unknown ways to strengthen the frame.

I' can go either way, but I want to see CD's opinion on this subject. What are your thoughts on how to do it, and why?

EDIT: Would it be legal in the bumper rules if both sides of a wide-based robot were open for pick-up?

Thanks!
