Overdrive gearbox?

Hey all,

What gearbox will allow us to speed up our motor?

We bought modulox boxes due to their customizability but it's still virtually impossible to gear these for speed, the best we can get out of them is a very slight reduction.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Re: Overdrive gearbox?

Hey Ksafin, I hope I can help.

Is there a specific application you are trying to use the Modulox System for? There are a number of configurations you can use them in but depending on the application you may need a few additional components. For example the stock lunchbox kits have gears similar to a toughbox.

If you want to gear up consider using a 8mm shaft to 1/2" hex adapter or larger 8mm gear from AndyMark. These adapters are also included in the higher end kits. You can fit a max of 3 stages in the lunchbox 5 stages at 212:1 in any 1 Modulox Channel slot and many options in the 2slot and 3slot plates.

On our current shooter we are using Modulox with a 1:1 gear ratio off of 1 CIM. We are able to shoot aprox 20' with this configuration.

Feel free to comment here or email me directly at dan@ir3creative.com. Also, if you have any pictures or cad files that may help us understand your application send those along!

Dan

Re: Overdrive gearbox?

Hi Dan,

We're trying to use a beatbox for our launcher, but want to gear it up for a higher speed and range.

I'll look into the AndyMark parts you mentioned, but I think we found a solution we may use.

The beatbox had hexspacers provided that fit on the output shaft;
Since we want the smallest gear on the output shaft and the largest gear to turn it, we're going to drill a slightly larger hole in the smallest gear, and then weld one of the hex spacers into this hole.

This will allow us to place this small gear on the output shaft, and allow for an upwards gear ratio.

Re: Overdrive gearbox?

That sounds like a cool solution! Using the adapter below and combining that with your welding idea would get you an awful lot of 1 stage gearing! This would also work with boring out and broaching a cluster gear for a 1/2"hex or finding an off the shelf output gear that matches your intent.

If you can use 2 stages and don't feel like modding anything another idea would be to buy one of these 8mm to 1/2 hex shaft adapters: http://www.andymark.com/product-p/am-0588.htm

Depending on what you need for gearing you could then use a 50 or 56 gear on the CIM to a 14 tooth or any of the cluster gears. On the output stage keep everything as close to 1:1 as you can, 50:50 may be an ok option. Or adjust as you need, it doesn't really matter because it's modular.

Hope this helps get you going!
