LED indicators

After our first regional last weekend, we noticed that our drivers had a hard time determining whether certain motors on our ball elevator and shooter were running or not (we had some ball-jamming issues that caused a motor burnout). While we are gong to correct the jamming issue we are also thinking of adding some LED lights on the robot to indicate the motor run status. Can such LED's be run directly from a custom circuit like a switch or hall effect probe or does the sensing signal first have to go the digital sidecar and then back out to the LEDs? It would be easier if we would not have to go the sidecar/cRio route.
