other examples: Most people incorrectly refer to polystyrene foam cups as Styrofoam. Incorrect !! Polystyrene come in two forms. Extruded and Expanded. Expanded is what the drinking cups are. Extruded is the building insulation. Expanded cells will collapse and hold water, Extruded will not. That is why it is illegal to build boat docs from expanded. Styrofoam is extruded polystyrene made by Dow Chemical. It is blue. Not pink, not white, and and not cups. Coca-Cola is cola carbonated sugar water caramelized soft drink. Pepsi isn't Coke, Sams Cola isn't Coke. But they are all cola's.. |

Ooh, this is fun! I've got some:
Does your team use Kleenex or facial tissue? Does your team use Allen wrenches or hex keys? Does your team use TiVo or a digital video recorder? |

How about a Xerox or a copier? (Think carefully...)
Mac/PC is a moot point. Macs are PCs (Personal Computers). |

We used round polycord. Lighter and easier to work with. |

We didn't have either, so we used Gates belts with minibot wheels on pickup. It works very well.

Re: Which does your team use polycord or eurathane belts?
I know you know what my team uses
, but you may not know that the choice of belting entirely depends upon the application. Some belts are better than others for some things. |

Re: Which does your team use polycord or eurathane belts?
To answer your question, we used probably 60 ft of urethane belting from McMaster Carr and used a heat gun to mesh them together. After that we used a belt sander(disk type) to remove the lip where they were joined which really helps them to last longer on the robot. We use them to transmit power as well as pick up balls and have had no failures recorded with them.

Re: Which does your team use polycord or eurathane belts?
We used .25" surgical tubing for our belts. To connect the ends we used about two inches of very small round urethane belting (solid) that barely fit inside the tubing (you had to roll it on to get it to stay). That and some superglue = we "broke" two very cheap belts over the course of two regionals, and can fix them in a matter of (literally) seconds.

Re: Which does your team use polycord or eurathane belts?
I'll avoid beating the dead horse (glue is too cheap), and say this:
We used 3/16" solid-core round belts, clear (because orange would be mild heresy thanks to our USC sponsorship), welded with a lighter in a jig made from scraps. We've had some jump their pulleys (not unexpected due to the nature of our robot), but none have broken. |

We keep our drinks cool in the Frigidaire. And our drinks are always ko-cola. We move piles of dirt around with our Bobcat ( skid-steer ) Hey, pass me a Q-tip. To answer your question, round belts, solid core. We heat weld them together. We took an aluminum plate that we heat with a hot air gun on one side and we press the two ends together on the other side of the plate. The students are skilled in watching the face of the cord applied to the plate heat up and deciding when to then put the ends together for the weld. Last edited by ebarker : 23-03-2012 at 10:43. To answer the question, we used 1/4" round, solid core, polyurethane belting that we welded (melted) together - orange so it matches our color scheme. Works very well. |
