Team 2470 Summer Project

Over the summer FRC Team #2470 will be creating a Go-Kart using items purchased from AndyMark. We will be posting updates to this thread and we will be uploading a how-to-build document for other teams to use. Below I have posted a link to the most current video of our summer project.

Re: Team 2470 Summer Project

Have you tried running this with a person or at least a similar weight on it? It seems like one CIM on each wheel couldn't go very fast when bogged down with the weight of a human being (unless they are a very light one). And, since you aren't constrained by FRC on motor allowance, you could probably beef this up by doubling up the CIMS.

Of course, I could be wrong, as I never tried something of this nature before.

Thats a fun project! Omnis dont seem too safe if a human will ride that.. plus they wear out quickly if you ever drive it on pavement.

At the moment if we put anymore than about 150 pounds, the frame starts to bend but the CIMS seem to run fine. We are investing in some small casters to put on the bottom of the polycarbonate.

Very fun! Originally it was designed after the Dean-bot on AndyMark but we decided against investing in mecanums and the iOS controller due to price. We have not out-ruled them for future purchases though. The seat we will be installing on the top will include a seat belt for safety

Re: Team 2470 Summer Project

I also am concerned about the omnis. I worked at a go-kart track for three summers. The amount of sideways sliding around that that base is doing is something that we wouldn't allow except maybe on the slick track, and probably not even then--it looks like you have no control sideways, and on the slick track you did have some control even when going sideways (you're effectively trying to drift at those times).

What I would do, if you were going to have a person riding it, is to figure out which end will be the back. That end would get 2+ CIMs/wheel, and some form of traction wheels. (Personally, I'd throw some Colsons on as traction wheels--they aren't that hard to adapt to an AM parts set.) The other end would get some weights, and dual omnis to smooth out the ride.

The other option I might pull would be to utilize mecanum wheels. For example, the AM 10" ones. This would give you side-to-side control, with some ability to slide around--and I'd go with a pair of CIMs on each wheel.

Re: Team 2470 Summer Project

Building a Go-Kart is something I have been contemplation doing for a personal summer project as well, I had my idea based off this :
http://www.instructables.com/id/Chib...iature-Electr/

I know it doesn't really use FRC parts which it seems what you guys are going for but is a neat little thing nonetheless.
