At one time I was surfing the FIRST web-pages and saw where a team was using what they called a passport to keep track of there students involvement during the year. I cannot remember what team this was but we are interested in possibly seeing if this might work for us. Anyone have an idea who this was?

I know for a fact that the former FIRST team #23 from Plymouth North High School used passports as a way to show and track student involvement.. it was a major part of their winning Chairman's submission a few years back and a really cool idea..

From what I learned looking at their passports and watching their video (one of the best submissions as a whole I've ever seen.. and I've seen quite a few..).. each 'event' be it a demo, a bake sale, Rumble, etc.. had it's own 'stamp'.. If the student helped with that event, they got a stamp in their passport. I believe, but I'm sure, that the students got stamps for years in the program as well. This way, you could open any students passport and it would show the work they had done over their X# of years in the program.. this was a good thing for the student to see and remember their accomplishments, for the adults to see who was there, for the sponsors to see the work the kids did, etc, etc, etc...

I think it's a really cool thing.. especially if your team does a lot of 'events' and you want to help the kids and team leaders keep track of who did what..

Cool note on their Chairman's.. the team's 'book' consisted of everyone on the team (btw.. I think I saw adult passports as well) passports.. their video showed all the various events.. and showed the stamp that accompanied it in the video.. that way the FIRST judges could easily match it up and understnad what each stamp meant..

That's what I know-- Mr.B could do it much more just I'm sure.. it is a cool thing.. I would've loved to have one, even if only for my 4 years in high school, so I could start to remember all the events I participated in.. I'm not even old and I don't remember!

You have a great memory Colleen, then again, I always thought you were perfect.

For Scott: The Passport to Technology theme came about as a result of the creative efforts of Ron and Paula Partridge, Christine Bonasera, and other Parent Volunteers as well as a fine assemblege of student editors ( Lead by Allison Burgess currently at Wheaton College and teaching Math and Physics to 5th graders in the Boston schools, And Lindsay Eberman at Northeastern U.)

The Video was ALL Ron, and If you ever get the pleasure of knowing Mr.P...then you will understand why it worked so well...he's a nut!...but a creative and loving nut and we were fortunate to have him 'on our side'.

I'm submitting this post this morning because of how important it is to recognize and understand the real value of the parent volunteers. Our success was predicated on their support.

No one on your team has a better reason to be there...no one. Not the corporate engineers (God bless them for their skills) not the teachers (They are professional educators and despite what the wonderful Mr. Kamen says...this IS about learning)...not even the kids, because they are mostly there because it's so $@#$@#$@#$@# exciting to be there...and for nearly all of the kids, it's a way better option than most everything else available (Since drive-in movies are closed anyway)

But the parents...the folks who every day get up and pay the mortgage, clean and repair the home, shuttle the kids, and take abuse at work....the parents come to the evening team meetings because they love the kids. It's the purest form of commitment. Love.

I've often mentioned that there should be a 'Parent's Award'....for no other reason than to recognize the contribution these folks make to the success of their teams....Ours would not have been anywhere nearly as successful without all our parents help. Fact.

This is about community, maybe even more than about science and technology. Believe it, enjoy it, it's a good thing.

I went to Scott's team page, and was pleased to see they focused on the parents.

If you would like more info about the Passport to Technology theme, I'm sure Ron or Paula would be willing to discuss it...I'll take the liberty of providing their e-mail. Ronald Partridge mine is attached.

Good luck.....and Love your parents....they are really cool too. (Or at least they were once....a long time ago)

First off-- thank you Mr.B.. I would have to say I'm far from perfect.. but you've always got a way to make me blush.. and if I were ever to be close to perfect.. it's because I learn from the best... and you're one of my favorite teachers :-)

--Now on parents.. I have to totally agree with Mr.B.. parents are essential..

from a personal perspective, they are the only reason I'm involved.. they both went to see the competition in '95 when my brother was a freshman.. I wouldn't have gone except my dad -literally- dragged me there.. made me get in the car and go.. I am eternally grateful for it..

From then, I had to be involved.. my parents picked me up and dropped me off at every hour of the morning, afternoon, and night... my Mom started a Food Team to help get donations to feed us for meals.. she was always there in support.. she was there every time I tried out for driver.. she was there every match I drove.. and even last year in college, when she couldn't be a real part of my team in Boston, we had another mother who brought us food, brought us to home depot, and did all that... and my mom helped out the team back home with certain things.. and then she paid her way to CT and Florida to see the competition and support me.. Not only did it mean so much to me.. but she did so much work during my 4 high school years that she was an essentai part of the team along with several other parents..

But no matter how much work they do, parents are essential.. from the ones down in the shop helping build, to the ones who bring food, to just the parents that drive their kids down, and let them be there... if it weren't for their support.. this wouldn't be possible..

Maybe we do need a 'Parent's Award'... my mind's rolling Mr.B.. I'll give you an update if it ever stops :-P

Here here to that, if it wasn't for the great parents on my team last year i probably would have ended up in the hospital. They litterally kept me fed when i was going through a rough time financially at school. For that I am ever greatful,
