Fix Victors or Jaguars

Hey, guys I was wondering if you guys know of a place that could fix damage victors or jaguars we are trying to do a personal project and we have several jaguars and victors that the black smoke had been release, I think I heard a couple of years ago that u could send the bad jaguars and victors to a company (dont remember which one) and for a small fee they would fix them

Does anyone have any idea?

Re: Fix Victors or Jaguars

I do not know of anyplace that repairs these and you may not find that very cost effective anyway. I believe the boards may be confromally coated making them difficult to rework. It is unlikely that a commercial site could do this repair for you for less than what you might pay for a new unit.

If these were mine and I wanted to reuse them for a non FIRST activity I would probably try to repair them myself. They most likely have bad MOSFET transistors. Hopefully you can test them with a multimeter and determine which ones need replacing to limit the work. It might also be possible to cut the leads off near the chip and solder a new one to the old leads without needing to fully remove the old ones.

But again, if a lot of transistors are fried, those expensive new motor controllers may start to look like a bargain.

Re: Fix Victors or Jaguars

For the $54 a new controller costs, they're not worth fixing, even if it was possible. I tried fixing a Victor a couple years back, and the conformal coating combined with the massive metallic current conducting paths pulling all the heat away makes it darn near impossible to repair without totally cooking the board.

Re: Fix Victors or Jaguars

The reality: They are disposable. The rework costs more than the replacement..

As second viewpoint: the cost can be considered "tuition in the school of hard knocks.".
