The 3rd and final OCCRA Regional was held at Pontiac Northern High School on Friday, October 3rd, and Pontiac Central took top honors with a series of exciting victories. Rochester HS, Team #201, finished 4 points back of the Chiefs with 71 points but moved into first place in the league standings. They also won 'Best Play of the Day' honors with the move that they put on Team #91, Lake Orion. Team #1, the Juggernauts of OTCNE, took 3rd with 70 points and moved into 2nd place overall in the league rankings. Team #33 Avondale was named the most 'Beautiful 'Bot' and Lake Orion took the creative engineering prize. Team #448 Cranbrook/Kingswood, led by former Chief Delphi driver April Roach, won the 'Spirit of the Competition' and the rookie Waterford Schools Team won a special Judges' Award for their Sportsmanship and Technical Persistence.
The League championships are all that's left now for OCCRA 2000. Avondale (#33) will host them on November 11th starting at 9A.M..

I was privileged to be a judge for the event (thanks Marsha!), and it was awesome. The atmosphere in the pits and on the playing field was very FIRST-like. The matches were exciting to watch too! If you can make the league championships Saturday, you should go!

The positive influences of FIRST were evident everywhere. A high quality kit of parts, a good scoring system, and lots of cooperation in the pits. Some robots even borrowed features from their FIRST cousins.

This could easily be a 'sport' that occurs regularly in gyms around the country.

Team 1 and the others that have worked so hard on this deserve a lot of credit - they have been persistent in their efforts to keep the event high quality. Way to go Mike and Justin and everyone else....

Ken

I could not agree with Ken more. The last regional was the best yet.

I firmly believe the this is very good direction to explore further.

In my experience, OCCRA provides 90% of the benefits of FIRST participation at WAY UNDER 10% of the costs.

FIRST should be both happy and worried about this trend.

There is a huge gap between Leggo League and The Nationals. First should consider creating an another league patterned after the OCCRA. It might reduce the participation in the unlimited competition. Then again, over the long haul, it might increase it!
