Talking The Bedford Express 1023 crash- in GIF form!

During the first match of 1023 in Detroit they crashed, from the third floor. Watching it hurt my soul so much i had to make a GIF out of it.

Enjoy!

interesting fact!
in revers it looks like the most innovative climb so far.

Well it wasn't fun.. and I don't plan on dropping our robot again. We had some pretty extensive damage, but we were only out for a two matches.

Our hopper and dumper arm and basket were smashed, the shooter tray was bent pretty bad, the uprights that hold our dumper welds broke, the shafts to hold the dumper bent, the fingers on the claw sheered off, as said before the sidecar shorted, and all the pwms completely melted, and an internal climbing component bent as well.

We fell because our top latches slide off of the powder coated pyramid, and our bottom safety latches were disengaged. On our practice pyramid back home our top latches hold on just fine and we would remove our bottom locks for easy removal. But since we slide off, we have to keep the bottom locks engaged to hold us up.

That and, due to the playing field being less sturdy than we planned for, we took a less fatal fall in a practice match early in the day. What you see there is our 2nd 3rd tier fall of the day. The first landed us on corner bumpers which saved us greatly. We did have some damage that was later discovered which affected the later fall. Also, as Brandon mentioned, the powder coating made the poles much slippery than our practice field. A number of small factors all added up to that fall. Hopefully we will have them all resolved for our next event.

Not gonna lie, that was terrifying to watch. When it started smoking after it hit the ground, everyone on my team thought that the battery had ruptured. You guys really bounced back well though. Sorry that you didn't get to show off your awesome 50 point trick, but amazing work all the same, and best of luck in your next event!

You know...the reverse fall GIF is a little too fast for me to tell...but I think that if that had happened it would have been a valid climb...hmm...I bet someone could build a mechanism to do that...can you say ultimate climb?

I stand by my prediction that at globals there will be at least one alliance that is just 3 30 point climbers with solid autons. You won't beat everyone, but that's a nice chunk of points!

I would watch that alliance.

Have any teams tried doing two thirty point climbs at once? Obviously 30 point climbers are rare as it is, and getting two of them together for anything would be even rarer, but I'm curious as to what changes when more than one robot ascends at the same time.

The biggest gimp would be that you could really only feasibly dump with one of the bots (try dumping too many, and there will be overflow). As for the difficulties of multi-climbing, I'd say the biggest one is making sure that they don't hit each other trying to get to their respective corners

Well, to me it looked like one of the pwms came out of its motor controller, and its ground pin came in contact with 12v somewhere. Probably the power to the motor controller itself. You can tell because the ground pin was blackened, the entire length of the single wire was melted, and the motor controller survived.

So, that's a lot of current going through that small wire, and through the ground of the sidecar. Neither of which are designed for it. The wire responded by heating up a ton and melting through the insulation. Since the pwms were in a bundle, it ended up destroying the entire bundle.

In the end, only one of them looked like the culprit (since only one wire had been burned in its entirety). Although I gathered that the sidecar was dislodged and had smashed into the chassis, I don't think that was the real cause.

Buuuut I'm not on the team and I didn't get a look at the damaged sidecar. This is just what I figure from what I saw of the damage to the wire bundle.

And theeeen there was the second time you almost fell... If your rear bumper hadn't landed on the second level, it definitely would have fallen. It looked like only one of the grapple hooks was holding you, and neither of the ratcheting pieces.

I hope you get everything sorted out before your next competition. I was very impressed with your design. :D
