Connecting two toughbox minis together

We need to use a very high gear ratio to generate enough torque to pull back a sling shot. Can we take the output of one gear box and connect it to another gear box where the motor connects? I think that should multiply the gear ratios together and provide a cleaner design than trying to put together our own gears.

Has anyone done this before? Do you think this can work?

Re: Connecting two toughbox minis together

Have you looked at the Stackerbox? It is designed to do just what you describe, and is very compact. Also, there are a few COTS gearboxes that have outputs matching a CIM mount, such as the VersaPlanetary. You could use two bag motors through VersaPlanetaries mounted into your Toughbox Mini to get a lot of reduction with near the power of a single CIM.

Re: Connecting two toughbox minis together

Technically what you are saying is possible, but you are going to have to deal with the output shaft of the first gearbox being different than what the second is built for as an input. It is also going to be a very oddly shaped contraption that you may have a hard time mounting. For high torque with CIMs I recommend the BaneBots P-80 they can get to some crazy high torques in a nice package. (Plus you get $30 off if you use your BaneBots voucher)

Re: Connecting two toughbox minis together

Thank you for the recommendation!

One gear box is simpler than two and banebots has the high ratios I was looking for. How do I get that $30 discount? Is there some link from the TIMS system? Is there just a coupon code based on my team number?

Especially with high ratio gearboxes, make sure the output torque rating of the gearbox is sufficient to withstand the load you plan to drive.

+1. The theoretical torque figure you get gearing a CIM 256:1 will shred the internals of the gearbox.

I don't do ordering for my team so I couldn't tell you exactily but here is the page from them that describes how to do it http://banebots.com/c/FIRST (the qualifing P-80s are at the bottom of the page, I hope one of those ratios works for you)

There will be a code in your TIMS account. Just copy the code and paste it in the Banebots order page. The $30.00 comes off the total immediately.

What motor have you selected and reduction ratio do you need?
