4451 ROBOTZ Garage Aerial Assist Scouting System

Greetings CD!
I have attached a copy of the ROBOTZ Garage 2014 scouting sheets for your use and feedback. We are gathering significantly more data than last year and may simplify the system after Palmetto.

Our data include a few more features than I’ve seen published to date. First of all, Aerial Assist is still a three phase game even though it doesn’t have the classic end game. I refer to these three phases as “Auto”, “Pre-Cycle”, and “Cycle.” Pre-cycle is that awkward phase when teams will have to clean up missed autonomous shots. I believe some qualification alliances will unfortunately never complete the pre-cycle phase.

We are also counting cycles started and completed to give us a pace of play statistic. Team contributions / roles are counted during cycles. Patterns of contributions made, including defense, will provide insight into team’s preferred roles.

Assists are not directly tallied. Possessions plus special roles of in-bounder and catcher are counted instead. I’m not sure if this is the best approach but it seems easier. It also may show a team possessing the ball more than once per cycle to help goal score.

The “lone wolf” statistic is designed to track teams that complete an entire offensive cycle themselves. We are tracking this more for curiosity than for ranking teams. I don’t know if teams will get impatient or try to build a quick lead against a slower alliance. Should be interesting to see how the lone wolf plays out.

Scouting System
We are using reusable laminated sheets to gather the information – one scout per robot. All the data is loaded into Excel 2010 for analysis and match strategy.

Please PM me if you would like a copy of the Excel input and analysis sheet. It will be ready to go by the 22nd.

David
