Non Traditional Tote Stacking?

Is it a viable strategy to try to stack totes so that rather than the totes having their long side parallel to the ground they have it perpendicular? This would allow them to get 2+ levels per bin, and may also cut down on time if it can be pulled off. Totes would have to be stacked in alternating directions so that the lips would be alternating , and not doubled up, ut I think it really could work.

Comments, Questions, Haikus?
Thanks,
Seamus (2491 No Mythic)

Stacking totes on end
Gives you extra height, alas,
Topples with a sneeze.

Re: Not Traditional Tote Stacking?

Our team has tried to do this, it does not work to any satisfaction. The smallest bump and it is over. Good luck putting a can on top of it (which would be the only reason you would be doing it).

Re: Not Traditional Tote Stacking?

It seems pretty viable if you lean the totes against the backboard. Our test stacks have survived enough to suggest that, if you do it well and design a robot to place a can on that type of stack, it could work.
