Go to Post It doesn't matter what goes wrong as long as you have fun. We all thought this was one of our best trips, even though we were second to last in our divison. - afowl [more]

The Washer Mishap (CAD is too fast)

We have a number of things set up to make life easier during the build season. For example, our part files have a number of parameters we use like description, material, supplier, and supplier part number. We keep these parameters up to date when we make the parts. We have custom FRC525 drawing formats that use these paramters in the title block so we don't have to fill any of that out when we make a drawing. We also have a table that we insert in assembly drawings that use these parameters to show a parts list for the assembly. Finally, parameters including supplier and supplier part number show up in the BOM so we can order parts or make a list to use at inspection.

A couple of days ago, I sent our lead mechanical mentor the list of stuff used for the drive base. He crossed off everything we already had at our build site and sent the list on to our lead mentor to order the rest.

He had intended to cross off the washers from the list but forgot to do it. I didn't warn anyone that the supplier part numbers for washers were for a bag of washers - not single washer. (I didn't even think about it - the supplier part numbers come in automatically when we insert the washer in a assembly.)

When the shipment showed up last night I started to panic. The box was so heavy that my first thought was "If all this stuff is going on the robot we aren't going to make weight."

I opened the box and instead of no washers or 1 bag each of 3 different washer sizes, we got 32 bags of washers totalling 5,632 washers! It took us a couple of minutes to figure out what went wrong. I think I'll buy a bag of washers from the team to keep at work - it'll make a good conversation piece.
