Too much grease?
We greased up our gearboxes and may have went a little overboard with the grease. We noticed our gearboxes get pretty hot quick. I'm guessing too much grease is bad so how would you tell whats an acceptable amount?

Re: Too much grease?
Excess grease does not make them get hot. If you used all the grease that came with the gearboxes, it is just the right amount. It is not too much.
There might be something else wrong. A few possibilities: The gears might be in "backwards"...there is a little lip around the center hole on one side, that lip needs to face the bearing, not the other gear. The motor screws might be a little loose, make sure they are tight (yes you need to take them all apart to check these things). The four screws that mount the plastic housing to the frame rail might be a bit too tight, which distorts the plastic. And the motors get warm when you drive around, that is normal. |

Re: Too much grease?
A Google search says heat and lower operating efficiencies can be byproducts of over greasing. Open up your gearboxes and remove the extra grease (the gears only need to be coated).

Re: Too much grease?
What transmissions? With the ones included with the KOP chassis you'll have to really work at over greasing them. There is a lot of open space in them and the excess grease will be thrown out of the way. Now if you packed the cavity by using say 4 or 5 packets of the size that they give you per trans then yea you'll end up with drag and the transmission heating up. Use 1 full packet per gear box and you'll be fine.
Now if you are talking a Versaplantary then it would be easy to over grease. |

We really need to know the type of gearbox in question. |

Re: Too much grease?
We are using 2 versaplanateries which we set up yesterday with 3:1 ratio and attached the cim motor to.
We had shortened the output shaft of the cim and then added grease to the gears and then some.(we have a tube of grease which we just stuck out hand into and smeared on the gears and inside the housing after closing it up) |
